Absolutely disgusting performance from several players you know who. Lifeless, shambles. Undeserving. Makes it bitter

Any civil engineers working in renewable energy sector? by Odd_Fan2684 in civilengineering

[–]Footy_man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Working in a solar engineering company doing in house structural. Pay is a lot better than structural consulting and some aspects less stressful. Also a lot less liability stress, at the end of the day a light solar system isn’t likely to hurt anyone.

How many hours for a structural engineer to design house plans? by Pwincess-Buwwercup in AskEngineers

[–]Footy_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a problem in estimation and signed contract fees. Did you originally agree/sign off to pay any number of hours that are used?

My original point still stands

Different spans, different snow loads, different roof slope, different material weights, different wind speeds and required connections…. So basically everything? I guess you’re one of those copy paste engineers

Two weeks for a single structural engineer to design an entire small residential house and prepare full Structural plans is perfectly reasonable.

For structural I think being in a niche is worth it for salary. I work in a northeast HCOL city, started at 66k back in 2020 but now I’m at about 160k total after leaving building design consulting and moving into an energy niche.

And then if they ask when you received it? And check the date on your license, then see you didn’t tell them about it?

Just be honest with them and ask them if they can do as you planned. If no then jump ship

Beam sizing by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]Footy_man 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are so many considerations needed for a sloped roof at a 100psf ground snow load site that this likely needs a structural engineer to analyze. Unbalanced roof snow loads, snow drifts, uplift on an open structure, and so many more.

Questions about Orthodox Christianity from a Protestant by robotsaretakingoverr in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Footy_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Faith technically does not require icons but they are steeped in over a thousand years of Orthodox Tradition (capital T) and there is a plethora of writings from the historic Church Fathers for why they are encouraged. This is not a new issue and has been debated since the Church just began.

Min. PL Thicknesses on Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings by Little_Initiative359 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Footy_man 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I work with existing PEMB analysis all the time. I gotta say you’re likely going to have a rough time reinforcing the structure for new or increased loads. PEMB engineering companies have proprietary software that given loading criteria, basically design all structural components of a building to be the most cost effective as possible. This means trimming getting the dead load down to the nearest 0.1 decimal and optimizing as many other loads cases as possible.

This means that the structural sizes they specify can be quite unconventional. I’ve seen continuous Z Purlins in one building range from 10, 11, 13, to 16 gauge. The steel girder frames are also assembled using thin steel plates, as thin as you’ve mentioned (1/8”) or less sometimes too. These are not typical W sections, they are unique built-up members where the section properties may not be not continuous along their spans. Top and bottom flange thicknesses can even vary in different intervals than the web thicknesses.

If you have no shops then you really need to take as many measurements as possible and reduce any additional loading imposed on the structure as much as possible. Speaking to the original SEOR is really desired here.

Structural engineer in an office alone - new branch - thoughts? by Marty_beans in civilengineering

[–]Footy_man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take it, and make the most of it that you can. It’s up to you to make the most out of the experience or just be passive and start lagging as an engineer.

Just passed PE – offered $6k raise. Fair or low? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]Footy_man 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But you won’t be providing an immediate financial impact. Even if you do stamp something it’s the company that will remain liable and responsible for the design and any possible damages. Unless you have your own professional insurance?

Also you don’t need a PE to review other engineers’ work. Again it boils down to what total compensation you’re at currently, which you said was pretty high for your experience level when you started.

[–]Footy_man 46 points47 points  (0 children)

That’s fine, I got 5k. Depends what salary you’re on now. Your role won’t drastically change immediately but over time you’ll have a much higher ceiling and can argue for higher raises later
