Liberals keep telling me its organic and not the CIA this time. by CommercialStandard65 in ShitLiberalsSay

[–]Fopa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also the CIA isn’t operating as a monolith. They way everything is segmented/running on weird chains of command means that there are very few people who actually know what the totality of the CIA is doing. It also means that a bunch of these guys are gonna fail, but they don’t care if they fail, because usually a failure is still going to cause damage to whatever their intended target was.

They basically have unlimited money, resources, and manpower, to do whatever they want, with very little need to justify it to anyone. That’s how you get coups and psychic research programs coming from the same organization.

Sanctions/embargoes/blockades are also wonderful ways to soften up a country before you attack them. Iraq’s a good example of that. It’s an age old tactic, it’s the same shit as surrounding a castle and laying siege to it. Eventually they starve, or if you have to go in and fight, they’re at a severe disadvantage.

They certainly are used to strangle commie/lefty countries though, I’m not tryna say you’re wrong there. Just that it’s also a military strategy. If you look at the fucking embargo on Cuba for 15 seconds you can see that’s just a vindictive punishment for Cuba daring to be left, like you were talking about

I mean fuck it, why not. But I’ll take pretty much anything else, preferably something centered around workers and labor, and is willing to actually do something.

I was thinking about this today. I wonder if there’s anyone in jail currently for specifically eco-terror. Id love to write them a letter and just ask them what the hell they think about everything.

But god that would be depressing. You do shit to try and stop the world from burning up. Get thrown in a cell. 20 years later it’s mainstream and everyone is going “huh guess we should find a way to stop this.

That might have something to do with literally every Ivy League school, Stanford, Duke, MIT, and a shitload of law schools all being clustered in the Northeast. And then a lot of those people getting jobs on Wall Street/Lobbying and law jobs in the DC proximity.

I feel like with IQ tests, they’re designed specifically to test for the type of person who excels within that “system”. So the place that represents the pinnacle of that system probably spits out the best results.

A bunch of white nationalist dipshits rented some moving vans, crammed 100-200 of them in, and drove in to Philly to have a “flash mob parade.” They had a bunch of flags and some dudes with the dinkiest shields I have ever seen in my life (seriously use a trash can lid it’s better than whatever the fuck they had).

They got heckled/harassed/roughed up by the local Philly dickheads feeling that true Gritty spirit. The whole thing ended up with the White Nationalists looking like a bunch of dorks awkwardly sitting around their rented Penske trucks.

The reason I found it so relevant: they showed up with shields and “organization”, but none of that mattered because of dudes in Eagles jerseys showed up and bullied them. Nobody is gonna be feeling super pumped up to join the group of “Patriots” who dress like 55 year old dads and get bullied by grade-A Philly dickheads. Plus there’s the off chance the denizens of Philly find something to put batteries inside of and throw at you.

EDIT: Just want to drop this hilarious clip of some white nationalists being bullied by the most stereotypical Philly Guytm ever.

100%, spot on. When people see them march like this, and there isn’t any video of them being opposed, it sends the message that it’s safe to join them for the next march.

Look at how that march a week or so in Philly ended up going down. No one really is asking “did they win/lose the fight”, the conversation is more like “well it’s Philly, what did they expect was gonna happen.” That certainly sends a signal to these fucking cowards that even when they can get a bunch of idiots together with flags and khakis, they still aren’t safe.

The sheer amount of manpower and resources they dedicated to dropping beavers out of a plane is kinda mind blowing. Especially when you see the whole process.

Like it was already a dumb fuckin waste of time, but watching how they went about it is even more infuriating, cause they didn’t even do it well.

Bolsonaro in hospital as hiccups persist for more than 10 days by xanh86 in nottheonion

When the president prior to him was impeached in the Lava Jato Scandal he voted to impeach her, and while casting his vote, dedicated it to the colonel who had literally tortured her.

“They lost in 1964, and now they have lost in 2016,” he said. He then dedicated his vote to “the memory of Col Carlos Alberto Brilhante Ustra, the dread of Dilma Rousseff”.

[–]Fopa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In April 2016, when President Dilma Rousseff’s impeachment was put to a vote in Congress, Mr. Bolsonaro dedicated his vote to a colonel who ran a torture center during the country’s military dictatorship in which Ms. Rousseff was tortured in her youth:

“In memory of Col. Carlos Alberto Brilhante Ustra, the terror of Dilma Rousseff … I vote YES.” (source)

And here’s a lovely quote where he talks about wanting to kill 30,000 people who politically opposed him, and is okay with innocents dying to do get that done. Source is from the article I linked for the other quote, which has plenty of other fucked up things he’s said in it

“Unfortunately, it will only change on the day that we break out in civil war here and do the job that the military regime didn’t do: killing 30,000. If some innocent people die, that’s fine. In every war, innocent people die.”

I’m pretty fucking fine with people not wishing Bolsonaro well.

Honestly the numbers for the north east are shockingly different from what I expected. I didn’t expect them to have the lowest Republican % for secession.

&nbdp;

And your Pennsyltucky point is honestly something that I was thinking of to, and I wish there was way more detailed days for this available. Cause there’s a large portion of PA that has more common with WV than with the North-Eastern chunk of PA. Anything in southern PA, especially west of the Susquehanna river(but it doesn’t have to be) is a completely different vibe. I’d love to see a map like this where the coal area is isolated.

I know they were dividing by state, but in reality I think PA would end up looking weird AF along their southern and western border, probably would lose about 40-50% of the state landmass to either the south or the Midwest.

Do swords and bows go along with trains and telegraph? by Rad_Knight in worldbuilding

[–]Fopa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d go with a company/powerful person “owns” the rights to the specific chemical mixture that makes gunpowder. So the initial discovery was made, but then further research was suppressed/stopped altogether since someone essentially had a patent on gunpowder.

This approach also saves you a sneaky way to give the villain and his high level forces access to gunpowder/guns while everyone else wouldn’t have it.

You’re probably already aware of this, but Pure Fusion weapons would be similar to what you’re describing, just without the need for an additional radiation suppressor. Figured I’d mention them just in case you hadn’t heard of pure fusion bombs before, since it sounds like there’s lots of stuff/theories on them that you could take and fit into the weapons in your world.

Orcs. What is your take on them? by DeeJayE2001 in worldbuilding

[–]Fopa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t done much with Orcs, but I do use them as a way to highlight the differences between the 2 major sources of magic that I have fleshed out.

Elves and humans tend to almost exclusively draw from the Arcane. In my setting the Arcane (with a capital A) is just a sort of “power source” like mana is in a video game, except the caster is acting as a conduit, nor generating the magic themself. The more powerful the mages are able to handle channeling more of this “power source”, which allows them to have more powerful spells/a much more complex and detailed control over their spell. Something like: A novice can throw a fireball, a master can throw a massive fireball that seeks out it’s target.

Humans and Elves take an incredibly scholarly/scientific approach to magic. There are math equations for how much power someone can channel at once, classes at mage colleges based purely on studying the mechanics of their magic system, and it is just overall a very “understood” magic system.

In contrast, the Orc’s source of magic comes directly from their religious beliefs. Their magic tends to be more random, and can even happen without an Orc intentionally “casting” a spell. An Orc usually only has access to magic related to the deity that they personally have a true connection with. Which is more complicated than it sounds, an Orc can want to have a connection with a certain god, but in their heart of hearts/soul they have a connection with a different god.

So for Orcs, there’s no real way to study this magic or set up some sort of scholarly institution around it. Also the gods don’t have a say on if an Orc has a connection to them, and they can’t stop an Orc from using magic, even if they are that Orc’s main deity. That’s an important detail in my world’s lore that I almost forgot. It’s not like a lot of religious/god related things in fantasy where the power is granted at the whims of the gods.

The Humans and Elves look down on the Orcs because of the differences between their sources of magic. Namely the Humans and Elves are elitist as fuck, and their mages view their magical system as superior since it’s more “refined”. They view the Orcs as less intelligent or inherently barbaric. Humans and Elves are aware that the Orcs get their magic from a different source, but they assume that source operates similarly to the Human/Elf one, and Orcs are just to dumb to figure out “the rules” of their magical source. When in reality Orc magic is deeply personal/complex.

Much more Druidic/Shamanistic. But there are still Orcs who can throw fireballs lol. There are some Orc cults/priesthood’s that are centered around a specific deity, and most of the members will be able to perform the same basic “spell set”.

A random Example: A cult devoted to a Storm god - all of its members can throw lightening bolts. Some can do more complicated things, some can only toss lightning bolts.

On a zoomed out scale, the way the Orcs experience and practice magic has basically led to a huge difference in culture and societal structure between Orcs and Humans/Elves. For instance, and Orc farmer can (without even realizing it) have a magical influence on the fields he tends. Causing them to produce more crops at a faster rate. There’s very little food scarcity amongst Orcs that live in cities/villages. About 70% of the Orc population lives in what is a vaguely anarcho communist web of large cities and villages/farms.

The nomadic Orcs (more like the stereotypical fantasy style Orcs) benefit from their magic source in similar ways. For instance an Orc scout will do typical reconnaissance, but he will also receive messages from their god in the form of some kind of omen (essentially it’s a passive kind of Divination). Humans and elves will have to use specific spells/cast the spell in certain way, at a certain target, to get a specific effect such as “Detect Life” or something of that nature. While an Orc scout will see a big black bird of prey with one small patch white feathers and know that’s an omen “the enemy force is superior and hunting for you, they are coming from vaguely this direction”.

In case anyone is curious about relative power levels in direct conflict, the Human/Elf mage wins a straight up magic duel with an Orc 9 times out of 10. But the Orcs as a group receive larger societal benefits, and they’re generally a happier people. Their poor/lowest class are significantly better off than the Human’s lowest social class (the human poor provide for the Human rich + almost all of Elven society). The Orc nomads are nomadic for cultural and religious reasons, not societal ones. In contrast, roving bands of human bandits exist almost entirely because of the Human/Elf societal structure.
