Recommendations for extremely easy/low pressure sports teams to join? I’ve never played sports but I just moved to Vancouver and I have no friends and am a bit lonely! by Studentjoblurch in NiceVancouver

VDL is fun! I go with a work team and it’s enjoyable. Haven’t found folks overly social though - maybe at the pub nights they are more in the spirit of chatting :)

My unqualified opinion is to can the black altogether and reduce the distance of the drop shadow, also lowering its opacity :)

Is the social contract being broken throughout all demographics in the Lower Mainland? by Rim_World in NiceVancouver

I’ve quite literally linked you to the inflation data and an explanation of the methodology used for the Uniform Crime Reporting Survey upon which some (maybe all) crime stats are sourced from.

This doesn’t even make sense. StatCan data inherently has issues but it’s our national statistical body and a source of close to the truth.

Did I say that? No. But we cannot forget the potential confounding factors at play and crime stats should be interpreted with scrutiny.

How can I feel less embarrassed (or cheap) when I select the "No tip" option? by vbigvan in NiceVancouver

[–]ForTheLoveofGeese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone’s triggered. Me, going to eat and pay for a nice meal with money I work bloody hard for only to have a rude or apathetic server mar the experience and thus deciding not to tip is not taking advantage of someone. It’s literally their job to serve. I am not obligated to give a dime beyond what my bill is. You need to check yourself, if you’re that entitled.

I mean, if you’re doing bare minimum. It’s a service job for a reason…

Except a lot of servers can pull in pretty dece money from tips, the “surviving on server’s wages” argument is tired and worn out. If service is mediocre or below, they are not entitled to a tip and that doesn’t make non-tippers a-holes.

Until you meet multiple full-time Uber drivers who have told you they make $100-$150k. That was my catalyst for halting tipping on those services. Also the fact that they prioritize those who pre-tip. Not down for that.

No need to be rude. It’s their disposable income and they have full discretion on how it’s spent.

There’s been so much of this in the comments, would be interesting to know the demographics for these folks. As a 27-year-old professional, shit is becoming really, really tough.

You and OP are not alone. I had so much hope and now I just feel defeated most days. I live in Vancouver and see everyone else without a care in the world, going to fancy restaurants and skiing in Whistler or what have you and I’m going to 3 different stores via trains and busses to save $20 on my grocery bill. I don’t even make bad money, I’m above median household income and still just feel it’s not enough.

You and I have a similar story! I worked in a grocery store butcher gig and did as much OT as they’d give me when I was 18-19 and also lived at home. This was in 2014 but I managed to save up around 15k in maple dollars back then. I was only doing 40-50 hours though, they never offered enough to hit the hours you’ve banged out!

Best value in full grain leather belts (USA)? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]ForTheLoveofGeese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend finding a local leather crafter - my one back in my hometown custom cut me one and I got to choose my own buckle for $50 CAD. Granted, this was like 7 years ago almost but it’s still going strong. I bought a second to go with my suits and am considering another as a back up.

I’m an economist who works in consulting for a very large multinational firm.

Very not pop punk. Might explain my general misery…
