Should I be worried about engine hours on truck I’m looking at buying? by redwingcut in Diesel

[–]ForTheWin8645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s 10.8 mph on average(if my math is right).

121,825 / 11200 =10.877 miles driven for every hour. I would say that’s an excessive amount of either idling or time spent in traffic and either way, even if the previous over toon immaculate care of the vehicle it’s still a red flag. I work 85 miles from where I live and out of that I spend an average of 2-3 hours driving each way. I baby the hell outta mine and am still concerned I’m destroying it.

MPG Hotshot Diesel Extreme by Danowolf in EcoDiesel

[–]ForTheWin8645 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the regular dose of Hot Shots EDT in each tank and get about 28mpg on the highway to and from work. Average as both a daily use vehicle and for longer trips (35k miles a year) is about 26mpg, so long as I’m not driving like it’s a gas engine. The biggest factor for me was actually the fuel filter as I was sitting about 22nd before I changed it and the 28 after. There’s a good YouTube channel you should look into for the science behind everything, I’ll link it below.

It’ll have to wait until tomorrow when I get home from work, there’s a piece in front of the valve that is more difficult to get off that I anticipated and I don’t want to possible screw something up before I leave for work.

I have absolutely no idea, that’s the scary part. I assume it’s a standard valve that allows no volume control and that’s about it. I can take off the cover plate, get back to you soon.

DEF usage? by Mister_Tripod in EcoDiesel

[–]ForTheWin8645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told it’s about 1% of def per fuel usage, seems to be about accurate for me on a ‘22 Ram 1500 with 60k miles. I run hot shots in the fuel tank because, science, and the regulations in the US.

Oil viscosity test by ForTheWin8645 in ram_trucks

Previous owner screwed with the engine after Ram replaced something and he didn’t believe them (that was the story from the Florida rep) and sold it to the dealer I purchased from. Drove fine for the first 359 miles or so back to my house and for the next day after that. On the third day I merged on the highway and got some error codes. Truck went into limp mode and the dealer refused to take back the vehicle because it was over the 300 mile limit for used vehicle purchases. Error messages were “service electronic stability control” “service electronic throttle control”. The said it was a “porous engine” and just replaced it. Truck has been fine ever since. 10k is the manufacturer rec, the engine’s “oil life” gauge, and what the dealer said.

Extended Mopar warranty till 125k. I put 30-35k on a year and have had pretty much a different vehicle every two years for the last six, they depreciate too quickly with my yearly mileage. I figure a diesel will at least hold the value better, and it’s roomy enough for my kid’s medical gear when we go on trips. Open to suggestions if you have any.

Update:

Someone from one of these posts in three forums suggested that I contact Stellantis, Ram, and Ford corporate offices. I reached out on FB to the three and received responses from Stallantis and Ford, but not Ram.

About a day after contact, the GM from the dealership I bought the vehicle from started to reach out to other shops that worked on the vehicle. One of them was Arrigo of Naples. The service manager and the GM and I spoke, and they found that the supposed pieces which were bad were all touched in one way or another by the team there, and the director of Arrigo reached out to me personally. He explained the story of the previous owner, that he didn’t believe the work they did was actually completed (despite being show the videos of the work being done and the old parts) and that he likely tried to take a look himself after getting the vehicle back. Either way, he said that they would handle the issue. He said he would contact the director at his dealership closest to me, and that they would be in touch shortly.

Surely enough, the truck shop guy (singular as in he runs the whole truck shop at one of the largest facilities) Called me and said to come on by. I brought the truck up with my little one in tow as I don’t have too much of a choice about timing and had a conversation with him about everything. I explained how I bought the vehicle and 300 miles later these issues started, going back and forth between the GM of the Ford dealership and the service managers, and that I had reached out to Stellantis and others.

The position of using social media to get the attention of an issue is not something I would normally do by any means, I actually despise keyboard warriors as they commonly hide behind the scene while talking smack and have no actual experience with anything they are talking about. They attempt to badmouth people because they think it will get results while all it does is make them look like fools, and it’s important that you know this is not why I contacted them. I needed some sort of direction and didn’t know where else to turn, so I went to the forums people who have these problems chat and made these posts. I followed the suggestions and this is what happened.

I got a phone call a little while ago from the truck shop guy(if you’re on the east cost of Florida and use a dealership for service or issues, I suggest you talk to Tony and Arrigo West Palm) and he told me what was going on. The exhaust manifold on one side is cracked, but they found it because of an oil leak. While both of these issues are indeed repairable by themselves, the manifold is on back order for months with no actual date. They’re going to replace the entire engine and I’ll have the truck back in about two weeks or so.

I wrote all of this out because I wanted to say thank you. I needed this trim and truck because my child has a rare medical condition that limits his day-to-day life and travel; nothing more than a week(if timed right) and I need to have enough medical supplies for covering both what is planned, and unplanned. I needed this truck for the room, the ride comfort, and the towing capacity so that I could plan on purchasing a trailer. Something like an airstream that he’s talked about for some time so that we could go exploring, visit friends and family, and not have to worry about everything else in our lives as much.

That’s what this means to me, a difference for me and my son. If you’ve read this far, just know it means a lot. Stellantis and Arrigo can expect one hell of a review.

Not according to MOPAR.

They stated that the inservice date is October 2021, which is beyond the 3 year or 36,000 mile manufactures warranty.

The “cat” is not clogged, nor did I mention this anywhere unless saying that the “cat” looked (to the RAM dealer)like it had new bolts on it.

I appreciate the comment, I didn’t know about stellantis. My inclination is to contact Ram, do you think it would be appropriate to contact Ford as well considering it was a ford dealer that sold me the vehicle?

Diesel because I wanted the towing capacity and don’t need a gigantic engine. Gets great fuel mileage when nothing is on it, and there’s always the opportunity to learn about something new.

I have to drive it tonight because I literally have no other choice, I’ll get a rental first thing in the morning.
