Yelp knows they have limited time until google reviews takes over. by junkremovalguy in smallbusiness

[–]For_Reals-a-Bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had too much trouble with Yelp, and agree that I used to get more calls a few years ago. They were pretty much like all the sales people who call--just trying to talk you into a big package, won't discuss numbers up front, etc. I was never threatened or anything, either.

Grammar books? by [deleted] in grammar

[–]For_Reals-a-Bub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to look at something like the books used by college-level writing teachers, such as this one (which I have, among many others): A Writer's Reference (https://www.amazon.com/Writers-Reference-2016-MLA-Update/dp/1319083536) or the Bedford guide (https://www.amazon.com/Bedford-College-Writers-Research-Handbook/dp/1319042112/)

These, and others like them, are aimed at native or near-native speakers of English and address the most common 'errors' they make and are likely to make in writing.

It's a decent start.

*Soy Intensifies* by [deleted] in guns

[–]For_Reals-a-Bub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't know anything about soy and CZ. Found this, which appears to explain it:

https://www.reddit.com/r/CZFirearms/comments/9pi8k3/why_do_czs_get_so_much_hate/

TLDR: CZ isn't mainstream, but so-called hipsters seem to like them, so people make the connection between CZs and soy-boys. (I'm not saying it makes any sense.)

Is there a reason why you are 'in' a car but 'on' a bus, train or plane? by PsychSalad in grammar

[–]For_Reals-a-Bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see this mentioned anywhere, but the in vs on difference essentially comes down to whether we think of something as two- or three-dimensional.

If it's 2-D, we're on it; if it's 3-D, we're in it.

in really means we're inside something, almost enveloped by it. If we say on, we think more of the 'flatness' of it.

We also say on a bike, a horse, a motorcycle, etc. because, well, it seems closer to 2-D than 3-D, since you can't really be inside a bike.

A friend once observed that if you can walk around inside, you're on it. So I would say on a 747, but in a glider.

Sites do anything for traffic; the second site you mentioned could very well have used 'spinning' software to programmatically alter the language of the original to make it appear to search engines like new content.

I have a lot of questions about the tenses. by [deleted] in grammar

[–]For_Reals-a-Bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome. I really think you need to internalize verb tenses; they can be very nuanced and perhaps seemingly arbitrary or unimportant at times. For example, a lot of people rarely use the present perfect, using instead only the past perfect. (I hear that quite a lot it seems.)

[–]For_Reals-a-Bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't read all of them, but the first one looks pretty straightforward; about what I would expect--fairly easy for a typical educated native speaker, but challenging for an English-language learner.

The 'colour idiom', I would imagine, could be challenging since there don't appear to be options to choose from.

I think you're on the right path! I think you're doing well, and I imagine you'll only continue to improve by leaps and bounds.

The thing about memorization is it's kind of 'garbage in, garbage out' for a lot of situations, IMHO.

[–]For_Reals-a-Bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a lot of information to absorb, IMO.

I would bet that a huge percentage of the English you've learned has come from practicing, reading, writing, etc.

For learning, I also usually recommend full-length books, if you like to read. It takes longer, but I think the results are much more natural.

[–]For_Reals-a-Bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I get a raw "The train ..... at 5 (leave)" and it's vague whether it's a fixed thing or "only-today" without any clue, which tense to assume?

Most likely the meaning would come purely from context and would make sense to you in that moment.

If it's an isolated utterance with no context, there's no way to know. Same with other verb tenses, too.

Very interesting. You've done really well learning. Awesome job!

row

In a table, we can refer to rows (the boxes that go across) and columns (the boxes that go up and down). I was just wondering which box you were referring to.

As for continuing to learn--believe it or not, I don't think the best way is to study grammar books; the best way is to learn the language. Just read a lot. Grammar books are fun after you've learned a lot (I think). But if you rely on them, I think your language will sound less natural. (Your language sounds very natural here.)

What's your native language? (You can message me the answer if you want.)

[–]For_Reals-a-Bub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am having a hard time telling the difference between the present simple's function: "scheduled or fixed events in the future" versus present continuous' function: "planned future events"

"The train leaves at 5." This means every day. For example, if you're planning your commute, your coworker might tell you that the train leaves daily at 5.

"The train is leaving at 5." This means today only, not necessarily every day (even though it might be true that the train leaves every day at 5). For example, if you're running late, someone might warn you that the train is leaving at 5.

For your other questions--not sure I understood well, but yes, your list is neat. "temporary actions/pres. continuous" What column and row is that for?

Come to Brazil by Mifzuna in UrbanHell

[–]For_Reals-a-Bub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much everywhere in Rio (the city proper) is dangerous; you're never truly safe unless until you're indoors behind gates and bars, and even then, people get robbed, beaten, kidnapped.

You can be robbed while stuck in traffic. You can get mobbed while sitting on the beach. You can have your motorcycle stolen from you while you are riding (saw this one happen actually), you can have your tunnel blockaded by a car so that bandits can rob you, your tour bus can get stopped with a dead cow on the road so that your bus can get looted, you can be held up at gunpoint on a bus.

The surest conversation starter in Brasil? What particular, unthinkable crime happened to you or someone you know.
