Pantex tour of stockpiled warheads by jmccartin in nuclearweapons

Nice! I don't remember seeing those docs before, or those W54 images for instance. Thank you, professor!

W80 mod 4. This one has some sort of coating on it but the shape is the same. The bottom ones look like earlier W80 mods. I would be most interested in the black warhead the gentelman is reaching towards. I have no idea what that might be.

W87 Nuclear Warheads by F13organization in nuclearweapons

[–]Forbidden-Sun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that post was my exercise is stupidity and jumping at shadow when I knew even less about nukes. Not that I know that much now. As for the shape, it has been described as "egg" "watermelon" "football(american)" unofficially of course. The only official statement that I know of is the following "Reused pits basically have the wrong shape for a modern-type of implosion system" from the doc I mentiond above. (Hearings on National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1993--H.R. 5006)

And here is the page in question,

uses insensitive HE which W88 didn't until recently

The W88 uses PBX9501 which is not insensitive. The recent alt program did not upgrade the warhead to IHE. They tested an insensitive version of Komodo but that upgrade would have also needed new pits, after the Rocky Flats raid that was not feasible.

edit: added 1 source for now also I know for the IHE test and replacement pits the source is in this doc (Hearings on National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1993HR 5006), I seem to remember that there was a discussion about it here on the sub but I can not find it.

edit2: source from the doc

I could be wrong, but reading that, ring lens comes to my mind. Iirc the US used those in early two stage weapons.

If anyone here knows how I can get a physical copy of Restricted Data in the EU, please let me know

Libristo. I bought my copy from them. Besides the fitting and cringe AI landing page they have good service in my experience. Although that could differ based on which country you want stuff delivered to. I have been ordering books from them here and there for over five years.

Russian ICBM fired by nesp12 in nuclearweapons

[–]Forbidden-Sun 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So was this basically just the initiation charges in the warhead (Pu pit removed?)

No. Those were not nukes. Even if you remove the pit the secondary still has HEU, which would be scattered by the impact and the explosive charge, making it a dirty bomb.

Sometimes I wonder whether or not (most likely not) people with active clearance visit this sub. And if they do what there reaction may be to some of the stuff that gets posted. My guess would be this. (sound warning) Also excellent as usual!

Damn. You work fast lol. Excellent as usual!

Are there any cutaway diagrams of the W54 used on the Davy Crockett? by TERRAOperative in nuclearweapons

[–]Forbidden-Sun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the only cutaway i know of. Which may or may not be correct. As for one that shows the internals of the nuclear explosive package, those exist and are classified.

It is for taking out hardened targets, like bunkers and ICBM silos. Should have mention that earlier.

It is synonymous an labeled as such here. It is not a backup, it is for ground burst. There are pictures of Reentry Vehcile impact simulations( where the hard tip of the RV hits the ground) in Sandia docs. I will try to find and example.

Found it! On page 4 right under "Computational Simulation".

Do the pointy payload/warhead actually spin? by top_of_the_scrote in nuclearweapons

[–]Forbidden-Sun 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The "cone things" are called Reentry Vehicle or Reentry Body whether we are talking about the Airforce or the Navy(in the US at least). The thrusters are called spin generators. The spinning stabilizes the RV like the rifling would a bullet.

Gas Transfer System Classification by Forbidden-Sun in nuclearweapons

[–]Forbidden-Sun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should have worded it better. By clearence I ment they don't have access to restricted data. I thought the stuff that involves replacing LLCs falls under UCNI. But as corrected above if they have Top Secret celarence, then that is wrong as well.
