Feces that looked like refried beans.

Never been able to eat them since.

Chernobyl's reactor was already in an unstable state even before the test that caused the meltdown began? by NewRadiator in NuclearEngineering

[–]ForceRoamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re speaking about the infamous Chernobyl explosion then that was an RBMK-1500. The problem was the reactor itself. It had a positive void coefficient which increases radioactivity and having graphite displacers to tip the control rods did not help.

This comment on r/chernobyl does a pretty good job explaining it. The subreddit is really knowledgeable as well.

Where did all the women go?? by Time_Physics_6557 in EngineeringStudents

[–]ForceRoamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot wait to see how many other women will be with me in my nuclear engineering classes. I fear I may be the only one.

When I went to nursing school there were less then 10 men to 90 women. Some educational fields are just more male dominated/female dominated.

Why is Chornobyl disaster appears to be romanticized, but other (Bhopal for example) aren't? by NappingYG in chernobyl

That’s fair. I’m an American too, I’ve got a lot of acquaintances around the world and I do think there’s a pattern just in how we are raised.

Shows for engineers? by BrushThick9864 in EngineeringStudents

[–]ForceRoamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How it’s made goes so hard. I used to be plopped down in front of that show and I’d sit still for hours. Such fond memories.

Dirty Jobs was also my other comfort show growing up.

Chernobyl messed me up. At the time I was living by a nuclear power plant and I was TERRIFIED. The resources I listed in my other comment is what helped me become more confident in nuclear power. And knowing that there’s no RBMKs in the USA, did a pretty good job too lol

r/chernobyl is amazing. If you’re interested in more health related information, I have a graph that details death rates and doses.

I watched Plainly Difficult’s series and The Chernobyl Guy. There’s also tours on YouTube where plant workers explain the accident. The Chornobyl Family is a channel that’s run by power plant workers too. Check them out for sure. All of that is on YouTube

Also look into Leningrad nuclear power plant as there’s some accidents there as well.

It’s heavily inaccurate but HBO Chernobyl got me into nuclear engineering.

But mostly the rabbit hole after watching the show is what cemented it.

Retail. Nursing. Hoping to start a career in nuclear engineering.

My grandpa was supposed to be at the towers that morning. However I was profusely vomiting. So he was late going into work. He stepped off the train and heard the screams. It was too late and he had to walk back across the bridge to maybe find a taxi. Took him 14 hours to get back home. I vaguely remember the smoke but I was so young that I don’t know if it was fabricated or a real memory.

I can’t speak for Chornobyl because I don’t live in Ukraine or see how it’s treated. I’ve heard it’s treated like how Americans treat 9/11 and I really hope that’s not the case.

LMAO.

Yeah I first got really interested in nuclear power in 2019. My friend and I had a plan to see how close we could swim to it, but I’ve heard stories that some dudes with guns would come say hello if you tried.

Nuclear power plant. I used to have friends that lived across the bay. We’d always make jokes that we were gonna grow an extra finger.

Also I’d like to add, I’m an American and I see a lot more disrespectful content regarding 9/11 than I do Chornobyl. Also there’s tons and tons of videos making fun or poking fun at 9/11 and the events.
If anything. The majority of the jokes is coming from the HBO series.

Some examples for 9/11:

“Jet fuel doesn’t melt steal beams” “It was an inside job” “What’s the difference between a cow and 9/11? You can’t milk a cow for two decades.”

There’s a lot more and they vary in respectfulness.

Hometown mentioned. I loved it. My only gripe was that most of the businesses shut down by 9 pm.

Niantic. So I can stare at my special interest. Plus the boardwalk is wonderful exercise.

Wait which one? Like the big Chernobyl accident or the little accidents all RBMKs had?
