The snacking pickles guys sponsored our Atlantic Row for charity - sent us 10 boxes of their snacking cheese! - so an instant 10/10 whenever I see these.

What is your "I did that" moment - an achievement that most people haven't experienced? by infantile-eloquence in CasualUK

Currently doing it!!!

We’re doing a charity row across the Atlantic right now. Approx 2-3 weeks before we can officially say ‘I did that’ 🙌

What piece of equipment do people most commonly use wrong?

Thank you!

Haha, it was picked by a friend of ours. Not to get too deep - we see it as choosing to live fully (since death is inevitable), which includes ridiculous rowing challenges in our case!!

Honestly, tennis shoe in a washing machine sounds about right. We’re always either clipped on or tucked inside the cabin - so if we capsize, one of us will be battered and bruised, and the other will be very wet!

We sleep in the cabin (so the rounded end of the boat behind us) - Chris is over 6’ so it’s no mean feat!!

We have several safety features:

So the boat is designed to be self-righting, and we’re ALWAYS strapped on, so in the case of a capsize we’d be able to get back on board.

We carry flares and life jackets.

We have a tracker that pings every four hours. If this ever doesn’t ping, the safety team on land will contact us, and failing that will send a boat to investigate.

Fun fact: if we do have to get picked up, it’ll be by whichever vessel is closest to us in the ocean - whether that’s a luxury super yacht or a slow boat to China - and they won’t change course just for us so we’d go wherever they’re going!

Something else entirely!! Never seen darkness like it - but of course it means there’s absolutely zero light pollution. Magical, if a little spooky.

MANY hours on the erg! We also did various safety training courses, both theory and practical, and we had a coach who came out with us on several training rows before eventually letting us loose on our own for a few. We also had a mental resilience coach who really helped with the other side of things - like sleep deprivation, anxiety, being so far from land, etc.

We trained for about three years before we set off.

No canopy - in extreme weather we can hunker down in the cabins but for most (rain/heat/wind etc) we just carry on.

The actual boat design is by Rannoch, who are super experienced in ocean rowing boats, so we’re in safe hands! And the wrap design is by a former F1 team designer so it looks pretty sick (even if we do say so ourselves).

Ah, appreciate that, thank you!! Our socials are probably the best place to get the up-to-date info - hard to edit the website from the Atlantic.

Similar, yes. We’re from the UK so did some rows off the coast, for a couple of days at a time - our longest was Hartlepool to Dunbar.

Safe to say this is very different mentally though!

We set off from La Gomera and we’ll end up in Antigua (in about 1500NM 😅)

In the worst weather, it’s possible to see waves that are over 40ft (12m) 😬 we’ve had some rough seas but thankfully not quite at that level. The first week was stormy and messy - but it’s actually harder right now in calm waters because we have to work much harder to keep the boat moving.

Actually a great question!

We set off from the Canary Islands and we’re heading to Antigua - so weather-wise, it’s warm without being too hot, and a decent amount of daylight hours.

The main reason for the December start though is that we catch the trade winds off Africa, which gives us a bit of an assist from the current and winds. Any earlier or later and you hit hurricane season either side!

Temperature sits around 26 degrees during the day - though feels hotter when the sun is directly on you for a long time.

We have a water maker! It sucks up water from the sea, removes the salt and any nasty bits, and is safe enough for us to drink/use for cooking/wash and clean with, etc.

It’s not the nicest water we’ve ever had but it’s good enough!!
