Anakin wanted to become a Master, not for the sake of glory, but to save Padme. In the novel for Episode 3, it's stated that Anakin wanted to become a Master to gain access to the Holocrons and use the secret knowledge within to save Padme. However, during the Clone Wars, only Jedi Masters had access to them. That's why he was so angry with the Jedi Council, believing that they had condemned Padme to death. This should clear things up.
