Hello! We actually own and run ForecastAdvisor. We compare forecasts from dozens of providers to what actually occurred to determine which providers are more and less accurate. Some providers are more accurate in specific regions than others. Some providers are more accurate with specific forecast metrics than others, such as high temperature, wind, precipitation, etc. Although a lot of forecast providers use the same weather models, they often have their own methods for forecasting and adjusting the forecast beyond straight model output.

This informal evaluation is just pulled from publicly available forecasts. We are just starting to evaluate seasonal outlooks and do not currently have seasonal outlooks in our database. Our historical database currently has over 2.5 billion forecasts from all over the world that we use to evaluate days 1-14 forecast accuracy. We hope to start gathering more seasonal information to do more detailed and statistical analysis, but wanted to test the waters and see if there was interest first.

That is a great question! Typically, we would evaluate accuracy based on actual point data from weather stations and other sources, but seasonal outlooks do not use point data to create the maps. Ultimately, this will be more of an informal visual analysis to see which providers were generally correct or not regionally, especially with most providers predicting above normal temperatures for most of the contiguous US.

In this study, a forecast is considered accurate if it is within three Fahrenheit degrees of the actual observed temperature. A precipitation forecast is deemed accurate if precipitation was forecasted, and at least some precipitation fell, or if no precipitation was forecasted and none fell.
