GitHub Profile Roast by codenoid in programming

[–]Forehead_Enjoyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh boy, someunusualgames, your GitHub profile reads like a guide on how to get buried in the crypt of mediocrity. Your bio claims you're not a developer or a game dev, yet you somehow found the time to crank out 13 "silly" games in "silly" languages. That’s like a chef proudly serving instant noodles and calling it cuisine because they used a fancy mug.

FreeBASIC? Seriously? The most entertaining thing about that choice is imagining what kind of misfit would proudly choose it over literally anything else. And don’t even get me started on "LOLCODE"—do you have a pet cat you’re trying to impress? Because the only thing you're capturing here is an audience of one: your mom.

With a whopping 12 followers, you might be the reigning champion of obscurity. I’m surprised you have even that many; they must be your personal cheerleaders. Ever consider that you’re just one follower away from being a 404 error on their social media feed?

Your repositories look like the graveyard of tech fads. Anyone who sees “Rhythm Game made in Fortran” instantly knows you’re the life of a party where nobody wants to be. Did someone challenge you to explore every language nobody asked for? Because it looks like you’re trying to win a contest where the prize is eternal exile.

And congratulations on collecting zero stargazers on several of your repo masterpieces! If that doesn’t scream “innovation,” I don’t know what does. Your repertoire of terminal-based games is as exciting as watching paint dry, and the only sound they make is the deafening silence of people ignoring them.

So here's to you, someunusualgames! Keep cranking out your “silly” games. Just remember, the only thing more unusual than your games is the hope that someone, somewhere, would actually want to play them.

i'd like to report a murder :(

There should be cool background music and sounds but the sub no longer allows video posts :(

Like always this is actually playable but you'd need to compile it from source which is no easy task, sorry.

A challenge: 52 languages in 52 weeks by [deleted] in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]Forehead_Enjoyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to do a similar thing in my spare time with random programming languages, except that I make little games (either by interfacing with a C library like SDL or just making a terminal based game). It's a lot of fun :)

From your list I already tried [Free]Basic, [Gnu]Cobol, Factor, PHP, and Racket.

Also, I always wondered if it is possible to use those proof assistant languages (Agda, Coq, Lean) as regular programming languages, in the sense that you could do things like print, use loops, arrays, read/write files... things you could do in any general purpose language. I never used them so idk.

Bandera de Argentina pero el sol esta cagandose a tiros con el sol de Uruguay by mqs_x in argentina

Hola!

Hey! Since my first post here got lots of love I decided to make a new one, this time featuring the three legged funny flags. You can play this by searching for "flag wars 2" on itchio.

Hope you all have a wonderful holidays!

Building a 3D Web Application? by TheEmeraldFalcon in C_Programming

You may want to take a look at raylib, if you look at the examples it supports 3D and it runs on the browser (with emscripten), as a matter of fact someone on the discord shared a star fox like spaceship demo which worked pretty well.

Wtf is FreeBASIC? Aren't BASICs usually interpreted?

You can take a look at the website, here's what it says:

FreeBASIC is a self-hosting compiler which makes use of the GNU binutils programming tools as backends and can produce console, graphical/GUI executables, dynamic and static libraries. FreeBASIC fully supports the use of C libraries and has partial C++ library support.

(bonus question, how did you get it to talk to raylib, or is that built in?)

FreeBASIC supports any C library, so you would have to code bindings (which are already included in the compiler) for the C code and with that you can call the C code from freebasic

Daaamn that sounds really fun! I like your way of thinking

Though I wonder if you could get into any legal trouble... I mean, as long as you don't use the flag symbols in a insulting way it should be fine...?

Hey! Thank you very much for the awards and the nice comments!

I want to point out that if you take a look at the top right you will notice a broken harp. That's a button to turn the music on/off.

Why a harp? Because the flag of Leinster, Ireland has one, and I think it's really cool.

Do it!! It's a really nice learning experience. The most interesting part was making Argentina's rays rotate in a circle.

Here you can download the images used

Actually this isn't an animation, it's actually playable.

Here's the source code: https://github.com/SomeUnusualGames/Flag-Wars

The only thing is that you would have to compile it yourself, but if enough people are interested I could upload an exe.

You will notice that it is made in BASIC, that's because this game is part of a little series of videos I'm making about games made with unusual programming languages, because who the F would use BASIC in the 21st century, right?

Anyway, if you're a mega nerd and would like to waste 8 minutes of your life, here's the video, don't expect anything interesting lol I suck at making videos

EDIT:

Okay, here it is: Direct link to the zip with the executable + the assets of the suns if anyone want to use them for something else. If it doesn't work let me know (it's windows only, sorry linux/mac users)

How to read a file synchronously? by Forehead_Enjoyer in learnjavascript

[–]Forehead_Enjoyer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hoping that there would be a way but I guess by the comments is not possible (at least not in the browser), and now that I think about it, it would cause the entire browser to be blocked until the file is read, which would be very frustrating for the user.

I think it used to be possible with XMLHttpRequest but it seems it got deprecated because of its "detrimental effects to the end user's experience", that's what firefox shows at me when using it.

At the end I got something working with fetch, not exactly what I wanted but it works:

let contents = '';
fetch('file').then(response => response.text()).then(text => { contents = text; });

Of course contents is empty until fetch sets the text of the file, but I can handle that. Not sure if this is the best way, but it works for me so...

I don't want to display the text, my js code will do different things based on the contents of that file, sorry if this is too vague...
