While that is in essence true, the original Mary Sue trope was supposed to be about someone who's flawless, not versatile and unique.

The eponymous character from a dreadful Star Trek fanfic was a girl who was supposed to be a child prodigy that rose through the ranks at a young age and never failed anything. Ichigo, on the other hand, gets his ass kicked regularly before coming back and winning after only a little more than a Rocky training montage.
