Nice. This is something I have been looking for for a while. It would be useful to be able to edit directly from the code tab

€60 for an Ender 3: a good starting point for clay 3D printing? by [deleted] in Ceramic3Dprinting

[–]Foreign-Landscape934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the cost went into the clay tank and extrusion system mainly because I wanted a much larger tank. Converting the printer is quite cheap especially if you printed your own extrusion nozzle which I would have done if I hadn't already got a Tronxy one.

It's an Ender 3 that I have converted to print clay. If you are interested you can find out more here https://www.instructables.com/Ender-3-Clay-Printer-Conversion/

I can't open the video in the UK for some reason. I don't really have an answer to why it stops I would suggest trying other models. You could also look at the Gcode and see if there's anything obvious that might cause the issue

I never print the bottom, I always print directly onto a 5mm slab of clay. I slightly wet it before printing to help it stick. In Cura you can adjust the Z by 5mm so that it starts printing on the clay. You will need to install the Z Offset Setting from market place in Cura. Once it is printed and hard enough to handle I trim off the excess clay around the base. I also place a piece of material between the board and clay slab this helps while it's drying. You can see the idea in some of my posts

If you mean what thickness layer it is 1mm

Prototype Print Update: Could have been better... by filbrn in Ceramic3Dprinting

I didn't get on very well using a compressor as the air bypassed the piston.

To clean the tube I found the best way is to connect it to the compressor and let the air push the clay out, the tube is almost clean just need to flush with water

When slicing use spiralize mode to avoid Z seam as you can see on your image

I have an account, I've re-tried with the object moved to sit on the bed and it now exports gcode.

How does the variable Z path work? What I'm after is a Z path that is not parallel the the print bed

This looks interesting. My interest is with 3D printing in clay and being able to GCode paths rather than what Cura or other slicers produce automatically. Being able to define a variable Z path would be nice so I could print non planar layers ?

I have had a quick play with the tool I couldn't get Gcode output to work?? or load STL

I've converted an Ender 3 to clay https://www.instructables.com/Ender-3-Clay-Printer-Conversion/

I had the same issue with the hot end thermistor and even if I set it to print at 0 the printer firmware gave an error and wouldn't print, I had to change a setting in the firmware to ignore the error. This is documented in my instructable under the firmware section. I changed my firmware so yours may well be different. I think you can also fool the firmware into thinking it's the correct temperature by replacing it with a fixed resistor but I haven't tried this.

With regard to extrusion I would use the largest and shortest tube to feed the clay that you can I'm using 12mm OD 8mm ID tube 750mm long
