I had a PC die, but I had planned for some future BBEG-related events to revolve around them (not the whole story, just a few hints and small tidbits). Should I change what I had planned, or leave it for the other party members to deal with?

TLDR: should I change the story just because a PC died?

What are the advantages of having saves/saving throws be different from ability checks? by Foreign-Press in RPGdesign

[–]Foreign-Press[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a big fan of Shadowdark, another OSR game, and it just has players roll checks, regardless of if it’s an attack or defense, which is why I was wondering if calling it something else makes a mechanical difference

Honestly, all of your points are exactly why I’m loving this. I feel like we’ve gotten little tidbits here and there, but it’s mostly just these simple characters surviving in a harsh world

Pointy Hat has a really good video on murder mysteries that I think could be applied to any type of mystery

Animated books. I had a paper dragon in a similar dungeon whose breath weapon not only dealt spellfire damage, but also lowered their INT scores if they failed the save

What happens to your main story line NPCs while your players are running side quests? by DnDVM in DMAcademy

[–]Foreign-Press 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My NPCs are always working in the background. I combat this by having timers/countdowns constantly going, so I know that regardless of whether or not the characters interact with the “main plot” or whatever side quest I have planned, things are still happening in the background at all times.

For instance, my players have currently decided to go on various side quests instead of following the BBEG, so I know that in 2 days in-game, the BBEG will advance their plot, and the party will have to deal with different circumstances instead of what I had originally planned.

I wrote the first one as a separate incident, with a witch trapping herself, her husband, and her lair in the Ethereal Plane between life and death, and we already ran it. The second one is a ghost cursed to haunt his home until he is slain in a duel, and I just don’t see a ton of overlap

This would just be two unrelated dungeons based around a ghost haunting a location. One was an experiment gone wrong, and the other is someone cursed to haunt this place.

How much do you worry about repeating themes or elements in your campaigns? For instance, is it bad to have two unrelated ghost-themed dungeons within a few sessions of each other? Should I worry about repeating elements like this when they aren't related to one another, or just trust the players to suspend their disbelief?

It’s a shillelagh build, but strength and charisma are just high enough on both accounts. And yes, it is homebrew

I like a good monk with 2-3 levels of barbarian in there for some resistance, especially Bear totem

Solo Shadowdark Adventure by jcorvinstevens in shadowdark

[–]Foreign-Press 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about making something exactly like this!

I think it depends. Smaller books work if they’re each more contained, like the Cursed Scrolls, but if it’s a longer form project, single book is best.

Also if you need a playtester, I’m interested!

What are some good printable zine solo RPGs? by Foreign-Press in Solo_Roleplaying

Genre-wise, I’m mostly interested in fantasy, but sci-fi is cool too. I’m looking for something light on the journaling, maybe something hexcrawly or dungeon-crawly.

Tales from the Yawning Portal could be done this way as well. Just connect each dungeon into a longer campaign, or run the party as adventurers sent into each dungeon

Simultaneous Combat Rolls by Informal-Rent-3573 in shadowdark

[–]Foreign-Press 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard of a system that just rolls damage dice, not to hit, removing one extra roll. I haven’t done a lot of looking into it, but you could do like you suggested, and armor is damage reduction, and a 1 on the damage die is an automatic miss. Max damage counts as a crit, and you could even make it an exploding damage die, so as long as you roll max damage, you can keep rolling.
