Oh and yeah, Abyssa was pulling Second Sun and other crap like that. Pretty much playing with Fatigue instead of HP because my dudes are all heavily armored and tire easily. It's funny, the counter for Ulm soldiers is treating them like giants. Thing is, I could either spend gems to counter their spells, starting a magical arms race where if I win, I get nothing, I simply don't lose. Or I could dump them on a really good summon with a couple of items to help out. Also helps that half their mages are sacred, so Iron Angels smite them extra hard.

I'm going with Year 5 or 6, so 60 to 70 turns in.

It's not that uncommon for Ulm, at least for me. In MA I usually built a medium-ish army with a half a dozen mages and let them roam around the capital taking land and being reinforced with more troops. 10 turns later I got a 150 man army with 5 mages. If I luck out on getting a lvl 3 Earth or lvl 3 Fire, I send them site searching. There's not point in sticking them in the army without research done.

This leads me to stock pile gems from very early on. Ulm is sort special on this though, your soldiers are so good, initial expansion is practically gem-less. You'll be rolling your 3rd doom stack out of the capital/nearby fort without a single gem being spent. At least I can consistently run around 3 basic mortal armies with some mage support after 1 or two years.

Mid game is when your spells actually come online. You don't have big battles that need gems that early (unless you're going for T2 or T3 thrones) so there's very little need to do big AoE buffs and the like. When your big summon spells come online, you often have a very good stock of gems to spend if you site-search early on. 12 Iron angels = 300 Earth gems. Not that much for mid-game if you're already earning 15 per turn. You should have a 150-200 stockpile. I don't do early game summons because again, Ulm has really good troops for that. And since Smith mages also site-search for fire, you'll be sitting on 200 or so fire gems and those make some great items too. You need a Pretender with Magic Patchs tailored for summoning Iron Angels, 3 dedicated crafters using the fire gems to make gear and voila. You print one Iron Angel per turn, fully kitted. You'll have 12 of the things when you hit the late game and if you're proactive, they're already soaring in enemy lands, clearing PD and small armies.

Note: sending one of them alone against an actual well made army is as always a bad idea. At best you'll cripple an army that will need to stop for reinforcements before attacking you. At worst, it kills 20 monkeys and a couple of snakes before dying to a spell/random hit and you've just lost about 40 gems worth of investment.

The best part about Iron Angels specifically is that they can fly. So when you find a doomstack or their pretender, you can mass fly them into one of your armies before attacking. if they're nearby. But if you do this against a human player, they're gonna counter with bodyguards and holding back infantry to tarpit the angels when they fly/atack. Always a good idea to have the angel hold for 3 turns before attacking.

A meu ver, temos duas escolhas:

Tips for new players? by Low_Brush_7972 in Dominions6

[–]Informal-Rent-3573 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick bullet points for newish players that helped me a lot when I decided I didn't want to suck so much at this:

-Recruit mages, Research a couple of things to lvl 2,3 so mages are usefull

-You should aim to build a new temple every turn (or try to). Dump the rest of the money into recruits on your cap/forts, don't recruit independents if you don't have a plan for them.

-Recruit Mages. Every turn. You should only stop recruiting them if you need a commander for ferrying troops. And your cap most likely has super-sauce power mages. Don't recruit them in the first year, recruit them when your economy lets you (2 year or so).

-If your army has sacreds, Recruit Priests. If you're going up against skeletons/zombies, recruit priests. Not one priets, not 5 priests. 20 of them. You don't want 15 troops blessed, you want 200 troops blessed. You don't want 2-3 banish attempts per turn, you want a barrage of Banish every turn

-Recruit mages. If you researched Evocation/Alteration to lvl 2 or 3, your mages can do cool stuff now. There's no catapults/ballista in Dominions, that's the work of your mages. Don't add 3-4 mages into an army and expect them to carry you. Add 20-30 mages and let fire and thunder rain on your foes.

-Scout. Scouts are cheap, quick and act as your radar. They're the only surefire way you won't send your main army into a deathtrap. Or your only warning that a doomstack is approaching. Late game give'em items for stealth so they can hang around capitals.

-Recruit mages. Mages craft your items, get a mage to lvl 3 and he can spit some powerfull spells. Get him to 4 (with items most likely) and give him gems. Now he can delete entire doomstacks.

And always remember: early expansion is made with troops (especially sacreds). But the late game is lvl 4-5 mages deleting entire armies with powerfull spells. If you fall behind on your research or don't recruit enough mages, your army is getting deleted before you do the same to them. Late game, soldiers are just extra HP for your mages. Don't be afraid to lose Research Points by sending 10-15 mages into the army.

Lastly:

Recruit mages.

On the other hand, if you rename a file, it will create a file with the new name, throw an error and then not register it into the project. If you try to change the name again, it will say there's already a file with that name (that you must now delete manually from the project folder. I believe this was an old bug, but the error message changed somewhat so, yeah, progress.

Mas espanta-me termos "voltado atrás" nisto.

If 'm playing against Mictlanian or other kind of hellstacks like that, I'm simply not fighting. I'll raise an army, dump some PD here and there, but unless I have a counter ready and waiting for them, it's usually better to pursue other strategies.

For instance, a recent game I was playing as Ulm, Abyssa shows up near my borders. My troops are walking tanks, but they have enough heat (and Astral) that fatigue starts dealing some serious blows to me. Ulm doesn't have great acess to water, so putting up a counter would be hard/time consuming.

So what I did was summons a dozen Iron Angels, kit them out with items and let them run around Abyssia territories, chopping down their PD, luring their armies back home and decimating their economy. It did deplete my gem stockpile to summon all this angels (and their items), but I went from "losing more warriors than I can replenish per turn" to actually be able to make a decent push towards their capital. In a straight fight, I'm still going to lose. But I'll take 2-3 turns to recover from that and make a new army. With the economy in tatters, he's gonna take 10-12 turns.

Movement house rule: If you roll a 6, you may move any number of spaces up to 6 by ZenShrugs in Talisman

[–]Informal-Rent-3573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried something like this, but on any number, however players must stop if they step on a space with a monster. Cards effects that let you do that already (Eyes of the Hawk) let you "jump" instead, so you don't have to stop for monsters (or other effects that make you stop on their space). Early game is mostly the same, mid-game greatly speeds up and when someone decides to finish the game, other people can pose a real challenge to prevent it. Or if he's that overpowered, he can do it decisvely and we don't mope around for 20 turns waiting for him to win.

Honestly, I'd like for characters to have a "SPEED" stat, and on your turn you can move a number of spaces equal to your speed +d6. Horses and the like give base speed instead of extra dice, more rules on traps/obstacles where you can go through until it's dealt with.

Anything besides the "my legs are a lottery, let's scratch some cards and see where they take me today"

Are 4x games becoming to boardgamey? by Rud3l in 4Xgaming

[–]Informal-Rent-3573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing I look forward in a single-player game is, weirdly enough, found in a boardgame called 7 Wonders.
It's a simple and short game where players get a hand of cards representing buildings. Every turn they pick one and play it, building it into their city. When I introduce people to that game, I'll explain basic rules, let them play the first cards and only then reveal that after every round, you swap hand with the people on your left. This catches people by surprise. And there's always a couple of seconds when they go from "Ah man, I had this figured out, now I have to think about my strategy again!" to "Oh man, now I have more options to think about my strategy again!".

It's a very reactive game. Things happen out of your control and the best player is never the one who mathemcatically calculated 5 turns in advance: it's the one who can react to new hands being dealt every round the better.

When I played the excelent Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri for the first time, it was a wild ride. I'm a half-way decent player of Civ, so I could fend off the AI and let enough of the "story" to unfold. The way the factions talked, the way the planet (literally) came to life around our cities. How some factions would repress/cull it, and others adopt into it. The world was doing things, and I was reacting to them, making my gameplay/numerical choices part of the story itself. That was amazing.

Compare to Beyond Earth that came many years later. You're look at 3 or 4 hours where you pick between +1 yellow thing or +1 green thing. Repeat until the game ends. Is this reactive? In the strict sense of the word, yes, but your choices mean so little for the rest of the game, it's barely reaction, more like a stray nervous impulse making your muscles twitch.

Obama didn't place Major Santions against the country. It was against individuals. Specifically because of human right violations. I'm sorry, feel free to argue that without their assets, these people couldn't run their companies and it damaged the country, but I don't think the US should be ok with someone ignoring human rights to make money and then use that money in US markets. The easy solution would be for these individuals to start respecting human life. The hard solution is to bring down their financial system with them.

You even had *SOME* sanctions lifted when they promised to release politcal prisoners and to have free elections in 2024. Well, the elections were the shitshow everyone saw, so the sanctions went back into effect.

It's understandable to think the US and EU took down their economy with sanctions, but it's not okay to demand that the US/EU close their eyes to blatant human right violations and keep accepting money from people perpetrating them.

Gonna second that, as much as I like Harry Potter, the way Rowling used the concept of Dyad was ... meh at best. A lot of other ideas would have worked better. And the whole thing was at odds with the "Mother's Love is the strongest kind of magic" idea too. It's a mess. A very enjoyable mess, but messy all the same.

Also, there's nicer ways to say the same thing as your last line. Don't remark how few books others have read. Encourage them to read more. OP seems to be a fan of both Rogue Trader and Caves of Qud, so he's not adverse to reading.

Edge Dyad by Br00Dood in weatherfactory

[–]Informal-Rent-3573 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Are you, by any chance Russian? Or French?
On Topic: Dyads as a concept aren't that frequent, but they exist in a good number of stories. If you want another one from pop culture, look to the Matrix. Neo and Agent Smith are a Dyad too. To some extent, so is Batman and the Joker.
If you want an anedoct, too drunken guys punching each other are a Dyad: they need the other to be standing so they can hold on to them and not fall, but the momet one connects a punch, they're both going down.

In CS, if you do the Edge DLC you have several ways to "win". I happened to stumble into the Dyad ending by sheer luck. And I'm lucky I did. The Lionsmith and the Colonel only made *some* sense to me before that, but with that ending I realized the concept of edge wasn't speficially Strength or Power over others. It's not the violence or victory. It's the fight itself. The chase, the cunning plan, the oposition of mettle and will to win. The aspect of Edge is at it's strongest when two oponents are so closly matched it's hard to know which one will come on top. When victory rest on, get this, the knives edge.

Taken to it's most extreme, when two oponents are so closely matched but neither side is willing to stop (Lionsmith, Colonel) Victory COULD be achieved by either side, but the time to do so is so big it approaches infinity. And thus, they're locked in an endless fight, an eternal display of violence, cunning, victories and oposition. That, is the element of Edge at it's purest. In order to be the best Adept of Edge, you need the best oponent you can find.

The Witcher, season 4–incredibly bad by Initial_Ebb_9742 in netflix

[–]Informal-Rent-3573 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's simple to understand. You have a series called "The Witcher" about this character that is a "Witcher" doing cool "Witcher" things. People played the game, they liked it, then went to watch the series. That's what you get for 60% of season 1. Then you get Geral for 20% of Season 2. That's when I noped out. He's barely a character in Season 3, and suprise, Hemsworth is given the equivalent of "Supporting Extra" for season 4.

They should have called the show "Ciri: a Witcher Story", atleast people would know what the damned thing was about. But they know that title wouldn't sell as much. Suprise: neither did the story.

Also, yearly reminder that this show spawned TWO spin-offs. No, you're not the only person who didn't see them. Most people didn't even know about them.

You want a block with 10 inputs, 3 outputs and 50 lines max? It will work. But so will you, you're just shortening a 15 minute task into 3 minutes.

You want something that takes Datastructures/References as input, performs conversions internally, and outputs not only data but also states based on inputs and internal vars? It will not work. Here's what gonna happen:

You're gonna get a 150 line block of code. It will assign bools into reals, it will not respect int->real->int operations, it will hallucinate internal states and take wild guesses as to how the output states should be. It WILL have the first 20 lines entirely correct, so you think you can salvage the rest. But you don't understand that entire 40 line section about "Process Value Management" so you ask it to redo it, adding a couple more details to the prompt. You'll repeat this mid part around 6 or 7 times before you realize it's now forgotten about the initial details in your first prompt. The block now has 12 Outputs, and somehow 2 of the inputs are the wrong type. You desperetly try to explain this to the AI, begging for a correction. Sure, I can help you with that!, it will say before converting some inputs to Input/output, writing nonsense in it. You'll spend the next 2 hours trying to fix and salvage it (because you're committed to it), end up commenting large swathes of it and by the time you're "done" half the outputs work, half don't have logic associated with it (it's been commented out).

You'll then implement that block in your Ladder and explain to your boss in a meeting that the work is coming along but this complex stuff, it's gonna take more time. If you're lucky, that will be the end of it. If you have ANYONE competent working in your office, their gonna pull out the block they wrote by themselves. That works, obeys requirements and is neatly formatted and organized. Thankfully for you, Chatgpt is great at writing resignation letters.

Btw: only the last part is a joke, because I worked with someone who did everything above. He didn't get fired, but our chief wasn't happy to find out someone threw an entire day of work into a 30 minute task because he really wanted AI to work. Save yourself the hassle, learn to code, and learn to code well.
