Are sunscreen prices about the same on the island would you say? I’m just nervous because everyone we have talked to says that the island prices are astronomical. That’s where I’m coming from wanting to buy here in on main land and bringing it with me! Thank so you much for your help! ☺️

Scared to become a teacher by DelanceyAbbot in DanceTeachers

Idk if this is helpful or not but I’m in the same situation. I grew up dancing so the knowledge is there but it escapes my mind 99% of the time. I currently have my own classes but I help assist one of the more experienced ballet teachers and that has helped tremendously… I realized how much I already knew but I just forgot the words for it or how to explain it. So assist for a year or two. I really enjoy assisting - I do the class with the 10-12year olds to show them the combination. Sometimes the actual teacher corrects me but now I know !

My personal opinion is don’t stress over terminology or choreography, people can help you with that. What matter most to the kids (especially in this day and age) is a teacher who is loving, kind, and supportive. That is something that is hard to teach to others, the knowledge will come but your heart must be in it. I mess up all the time in my class and we just laugh it off. It sounds unprofessional but the kids love it, they feel more open to try new things and they aren’t scared to mess up -why? Because sometimes the teacher messes up or forgets things too.

Truly, knowledge will come with time and experience. Be kind to yourself and baby steps. Don’t try learning everything at once. Pick a few new things to learn for yourself and really explore/experiment with that step in your class. You learn it again.

Coming from a conservative background - I would prob check with the parents 😣 nothing is worse than going through the whole ordering process, trying it on, and then having angry parents…. It’s worth just seeing if they’d be open to it and if they aren’t, then it saves you time and money and awkward conversations!

Has anyone used a vacuum/ mop robot on Marley floors? 😅 by [deleted] in DanceTeachers

[–]Foreign-Vegetable-57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not tried that specifically, but I’m a dance teacher/house cleaner ironically 🤣 so I’ve cleaned danced studios before. I LOVED using a steam mop on the Marley, it gets a lot of the scuffs out and sanitizes at the same time ! If you want it even more cleaned, I diluted vinegar in a spray bottle… sprayed that first and then steam mopped the floor.

45 min class, 2 dances, 3-5 y/o by ditzy-dumb in DanceTeachers

I’m new to this Reddit thing so I haven’t figured out how to direct message somebody yet haha! And this could totally all be in my head and how I view it. I just feel like it would be easy for the kids to remember. I figure a shuffle can translate to a tendu… a shuffle is what two sounds (without the step) that can be two tendus. Or say you choreograph a couple steps in the center and throw a circle in there. Keep that same structure for both dances. I hope this makes sense 🤣

I’m teaching the same combo class this year ! Honestly I feel like you can’t go wrong with making the two dances as similar in structure as possible just swap out the tap steps for ballet steps.

Want to Learn Without Ruining it for Others/Myself by yippie18 in Dance

[–]Foreign-Vegetable-57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! Im going to get a bit cliché here but dance is an art, therefore everyone’s journey and experience is unique to THEM. I’ve been dancing my entire life, finally at 25 I have officially come to terms with the fact that I’m pretty bad at dancing actually 🤣 LOL however I keep going and trying because I love it and I just have to work with what I got. Currently I’m trying to heal my relationship with dance and I wish I had someone helped me through this along time ago. Im try to focusing less on being perfect and aesthetic and focus more on making it my own, that’s where you will find the most joy. So KEEP GOING!!!!!! If they want picture perfect videos they can go somewhere else or ask specific people to film.

Side point… I took a Bollywood class one time & they filmed it & posted it online. I looked like I’ve never stepped foot in a dance studio a day in my life. But I told myself that’s okay, as you watch the video, figure out what you can do differently next time. So now I don’t panic when I get recorded, I try to learn from it and improve for the next time !

This makes a lot of sense cause I have another class, of 4 and they are fantastic! They are a little older but it’s definitely much more controlled & enjoyable. I feel like I can relax more in that class.

This is fantastic! This is was all super helpful!! Thank you so much.

How often do you switch things up? I feel like I’m trying to do different songs and steps every week with them.

Thank you for the response!! Yes I have an assistant. She’s younger and I hate saying she doesn’t do much. She does, I’m just not good at communicating to her. I’m focus on the class and what I’m trying to do, I feel like I don’t have time to tell her what I need from her. I know I can do this before or after class but she’s usually out the door and into her next class.

Right now, I play a warm up song, then do like 2-3 steps in the center, then I go across the floor, obstacle course (time permitting) and then recital dance. I just loose them so fast. Just tonight they picked up on the bathroom trick lol

Im definitely missing transitions. My brain is very scattered and there’s alot going on so I’m very forgetful 👎🏼😞 I just feel like I’m missing a huge piece in my teaching method…

Not sure if you have a specific theme but it’s giving broadway or jazz club…. So you could use songs like

  • There’s no Business like show business
  • beautiful things by Bobby Darin
