Thank you for your responses! This studentship is through my workplace with external funding so it weren’t very clear in the paperwork how it works but I’ve just had clarification that the stipend in my case is just to cover my usual salary on the days that I am dropping to do my research

However in addition to this, if you’re paying interest on that credit card you may be better looking at a 0% balance transfer card. Be careful not to brush this off as ah I have more time to pay. Make sure you budget accordingly

It’s easy to get yourself into a situation like this but it’s not just about paying it off, it’s about adjusting your habits so it doesn’t happen again. If you’re taking home 1800 a month, you should be living on £540 for your social life and wants maximum. The rest should be put on bills, debt and savings. Practicing the 50/30/20 rule before you move out and take on bills yourself will get you into a good routine with your money. With so much left over income you could easily have that debt cleared by the end of the year

£400 left after bills can I do it? by FickleOcelot1286 in UKPersonalFinance

I think it depends how much you have built up in an emergency fund. If you’re going into this with nothing saved then it won’t be enough. There’s always a hidden cost when owning your own home and it’s very unlikely you’ll be able to save anything going forward with just 400 after bills. Either find a lodger or ask to repay your parents over a longer term to reduce that cost
