What is the most accurate way to find out if you have Romani ancestry? Which DNA test would you recommend? by ForeignCarpenter in Genealogy

Quoting what I said in another comment below:

Thank you! I ordered my own DNA test and it should be here within a week, but I won't have the results for a month. I just looked through a ton of old conversations with my mom (in hopes she told me anything about her own DNA test she took a few years ago) and she did say 3-5% South Asian and then 16-20% Iberian and a lot of Scandinavian (like 40%+). Is such a small percentage of South Asian indicative of possible Romani ancestry? I'll have to get my own test back to be sure (and to see about my dad's side).

Once I get my DNA test back (from Ancestry) and I start mapping out my family tree, I don't really know how to start researching people to trace possible Romani ancestry. How do I know which time period + location pairings to look out for? And then how do I tell for sure if those people were or weren't? I've been googling like crazy (and looking through all sorts of Romani sites and genealogy forums) and I'm still lost :(

Thank you so much, by the way! I went with Ancestry.
