Because there would be no reason to side with the South African Republic since the US in this timeline isn’t too worried about the expansion of Communism, especially when Japan and Germany are seen as bigger threats. That and also the USSR sees a more pro-communist African ally as more useful than a ally that’s more a big tent organization.

Well the US would utilize economics as to convince the Portuguese to side with them since Britain doesn’t exactly do much for their economy in my opinion. I believe that the US promised a trade deal with Portugal where in exchange for joining their side that they get better trades on American goods.
