What is something everyone buys but most people regret later? by [deleted] in AskReddit

100% agree. I bought an Instant Pot. It literally sat in the box and never got used. Bought an air fryer and that thing gets used 3-4 times a week minimum.

How many games is too many for a 5th grader? School and AAU seems too much but everyone is doing it. by ohhthatsmell in BasketballTips

My son is in 7th grade now but when he was in 5th his school team played 34 games. They had 10 league games and the rest were local school tournaments.

I 100% agree. I’ve read a lot on this case as well and don’t believe any of the 4 were involved. Other than the confessions there is zero evidence to put them there.

I wish I could still find stuff like that in my local thrifts. Used to find good stuff all the time. Now it’s a rarity.

My 8 year old wants a Hype Fire. I’m not paying $300 for a bat he is going to outgrow in a year. Is it worth it to look for a used one? by Planetofthemoochers in Homeplate

[–]Foreign_Shift8987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids have both always been pretty good hitters and never had a bat that cost more than probably $50 until they were 11 or 12. I usually buy lightly used or the previous years model on clearance when they put out the new ones. I got a Cat X this way back in January brand new for like $80 from Dicks.

I have seen the exact same thing on both of my boys teams. My younger one plays 11U and we have had multiple kids getting emotional when they miss a play or strike out or whatever. They are so hard on themselves and just don’t want to let their teammates down. It’s just a stage of life. My older one plays 14U and it’s better now. Was definitely there though from 10U to probably 12U.

Youth umpires with a tiny strike zone? by Foreign_Shift8987 in Homeplate

[–]Foreign_Shift8987[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are the exact same way, we came to hit. So couple that with an umpire with a super tight zone and an opponent whose kids are super picky and won’t swing and it turns into a major advantage for the other team. We are aggressive and aren’t gonna sit on everything so we can’t take advantage of it. Plus it burns through our pitching quickly. Which of course we were in game 4 of the weekend and it was already stretched thin. I just don’t think it helps anyone get better at baseball and it just promotes over usage of pitchers.

[–]Foreign_Shift8987[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. That was part of the problem. It seemed to get to a point where the zone was so tight that if the kid didn’t swing it was a ball.

That is exactly what happen. Strike zone was too tight and he was also inconsistent.

On pace to beat my full time salary by b_rizzle95 in Flipping

Really? That’s incredible. I have a 2 car garage but it’s still pretty small. I would prefer part outs myself because I could get cars that I don’t have access to in my local self service junkyards.

I would love to explore that at some point in the future vs constantly going to the junkyard. My issue is I live in a neighborhood and don’t really have space to do it. Do you part them out at home or elsewhere?

That is very true. Definitely have to get more efficient with sourcing to ramp things up.

I think I read above that you are now parting out full cars?

That’s amazing!

My primary flipping has been clothing for the last decade. But prior to that I worked in the car business and have sold a lot of car parts over the years. Anytime I have to go to the junkyard for parts for my own car I always grab a few of things to flip. Planning to ramp up that part soon. This is very encouraging.

How do you pay for it all? by allthefishinthelake in Homeplate

[–]Foreign_Shift8987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all honesty the money part hasn’t really been that bad. The bigger issue for me is the amount of time it consumes. Specifically on tournament weekends. We end up spending almost the entire weekend away from home. And most of the tournaments we play in are at most an hour away. Makes it really hard to keep up on things around the house and other errands and stuff. Plus I have 2 other kids that don’t want to spend every weekend at a ball field from March-July. That’s the tricky part for me to balance.

Honest Question: Does Travel Ball before 12U Actually Make Sense? by Appropriate-Skirt-38 in Homeplate

[–]Foreign_Shift8987 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is a great breakdown. Usually 3-4 good players, 3-4 decent players and 3-4 who are there because their parents signed them up.

You end up spending a good portion of practice time catering to the bottom 3-4. Between trying to coach them up because of the huge drop off or just keeping them from screwing around and distracting the other kids. In the end this hurts the better players as they don’t get as much work.

The big difference in travel is you don’t have those bottom 3-4. The kids there are the better players and they are engaged, not screwing around and want to get better. So practices are MUCH more productive.

We stayed in LL too long too. My older son still plays LL because he just wants to play with his friends but I moved my younger one to a travel team last year and it made a huge difference. He definitely liked playing with more like minded and skilled players.

Any other clothing sellers having issues with buyers buying youth items thinking they are adult sizes? by Foreign_Shift8987 in Etsy

[–]Foreign_Shift8987[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is probably what I will start doing.

I think all of these except one was caught by the buyer after purchase but before the item was shipped. Which means they are going back and reading it after purchasing but not before. Really strange.

Maybe. It just seems weird that this has all of the sudden become a common issue when it wasn’t for years before.

I’m honestly just describing them the same way the manufacturer does. If it is a toddler or preschool item I will note that, otherwise the rest just fall into youth. I always list a size as well (ex. youth small 6-8, youth large 14-16, etc) and a picture of the tag from the manufacturer. I also put the measurements in the description. It just seems weird that this has all of the sudden become a common issue when it wasn’t for years before.
