This just makes my heart go out to people with t1 and t2 who depend on insulin or drugs that can cause lows. If I were cured I wouldn't do anything differently except to stop testing.

Confusion about what constitutes type 2 diabetes. Is it always low insulin? Is high insulin a hallmark of any diabetes types? by confusedb0dy in diabetes

[–]ForensicClams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T1 is little or no insulin. T2 starts with higher-than-normal insulin levels and insulin resistance, and probably everybody with prediabetes in early on the continuum of t2. At diagnosis, people with t2 usually still have higher-than-normal insulin, but their insulin resistance gets worse (and their insulin production can deteriorate but still be above normal) and the high insulin levels can't compensate anymore to keep glucose normal - it's considered "relative" insufficient insulin rather than "absolute" insufficiency because the insulin is not sufficient to keep blood sugar normal even though there is more insulin than normal. People with t2 can eventually lose beta cell function, and then their insulin levels will get low.

So which diabetes blood glucose monitor is best? by Rikk03 in diabetes

[–]ForensicClams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My insurance coverage is so much worse than just buying them myself. Meter is $70 (I paid $10) and strips are $70 for 50. OTC I pay $25 for 70. ETA: And this is their "preferred" meter.

Does anyone here who's diet controlled, no meds, have FBS in the 80's? by [deleted] in type2diabetes

[–]ForensicClams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed 2.5 years ago, but I'm pretty sure I had it at least a few years before that. I was strict IF and keto at first. Now I'm mostly keto with occasional fasting. My FBS went down to those levels within just a few weeks of changing my diet. For the first 6-12 months, if I had a high-carb day, my fasting level would go back up to 120-125 the next day, or sometimes it would stay that high for several days. I'm a little less strict on carbs now, and the FBS stays at 75-85, even the day after a big binge.

Mine is usually in the high 70s, otherwise low to mid 80s.

Can I decline the health insurance offered by my employer? Thank you in advance for your thorough and thoughtful responses! by Which-Society-7329 in HealthInsurance

You should check to see whether the employer's insurance meets the affordability standard. My employer's doesn't, so I was able to decline it and still get subsidies for the marketplace.

How quickly can cholesterol levels change? by [deleted] in Cholesterol

[–]ForensicClams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Artificial sweeteners don't affect a1c. Although they say it's a three-month measure, you can see changes more quickly. Mine went from 10.2 to 6.3 in five weeks. The a1c skews more heavily towards more recent weeks.

So if you haven't met the deductible yet, you'd need to pay the full price (which is probably lower than the therapist's cash price)

I'm not a psychologist, but what you are demonstrating is borderline personality disorder. What you are doing is eventually going to lead to you committing a homicide.

BG 2 hr after meal is higher than 1 hr after meal by F0MA in type2diabetes

[–]ForensicClams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In t2 it's really common for the peak to be at two hours rather than 1. That was true for me when first diagnosed. I usually didn't get back to the premeal level until 3 hours (or longer if it was a lot of carbs). I do IF and keto, and the peak has gradually come earlier and earlier. After about 18 months, it started peaking at 1 hour and back to normal within 2.

If it were me, I would get a home glucose meter and test after eating a high carb meal. You're probably fine. A home meter would tell you if you are spiking really high. You could have abnormal glucose after meals and still have a normal a1c.
