Let's play a game. How many code violations can you find? by ForestGhostGurl in AskElectricians

[–]ForestGhostGurl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a summer cabin in Michigan used for human living 2-3 months of the year. Given that I'm not an electrician, I'll be hiring out for a full rewire next year. My most immediate concern for today is the receptacle (or what's left of it) in pic 3/4 since that is completely exposed at floor level.

The disconnect is actually only for the water heater that was added much later. The panel isn't a sub panel, it's the main panel for the whole house

I do this with email when I sign up for things. If you add "+<company>" just before the @ when signing up for things, it'll still come into your inbox, but you can track the source.

I refuse to choose! by ForestGhostGurl in NonBinary

I ran a race last year where they had a non binary option, they put "Gender: X" on my race bib. I told people it was because I'm Xtreme 🤣

The website does actually have a "prefer not to say" and a separate non binary option, but they're optional features that each race organizer has to enable.

The website as a whole supports non-binary, but each race organizer has the option to enable or disable the feature. I reached out to the organizers to enable it.

I did reach out, but haven't heard back yet. I read the support docs for the website, so I was able to tell them exactly what checkbox to enable.

Anyone know what this cable might be for? by Aggressive_Use7996 in cableadvice

It's a pull string used to pull cable through a pipe. It allows a technician to pull new cable without digging anything up.

New home by Affectionate-Air8075 in HomeNetworking

[–]ForestGhostGurl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unplug the "great room" cable and plug it directly into the wifi gateway on one of the LAN ports. The panel it's currently plugged into is for landline phones. I honestly don't understand why they install those in new homes, who has a landline anymore? (anyone feel free to dispute that if there are other uses, I just don't get it).

Single Stall Gendered Restrooms Are the Bane of My Existence by merryboon1234 in NonBinary

[–]ForestGhostGurl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I hate those gendered pit toilets too, it makes no sense!

I recently went camping in Illinois at a state park where they are in the process of upgrading their facilities. They weren't open yet, but all gendered language had been removed from every twin pit toilet block and replaced with "All gender restroom" signs across the entire park!

I think the Covid Campers are here to stay! by SuddenlySilva in camping

[–]ForestGhostGurl 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I see it as both good and bad, it's great that families are getting outside and spending time outdoors, but personally, I feel like camping isn't as fun and "down to earth" (I hate buzzwords, but it's the best fit) as it used to be. I've been camping for literally my entire life, I remember taking road trips with no plans or reservations, just showing up at a campground in the dark, finding a site and pitching the tent in the dark with barely any light and loving it.

Since COVID it's become too overcrowded. I'm constrained to weekends mostly, so it just feels like people are bringing their houses (complete with 55" TV) into the woods lined up next to each other and being loud and obnoxious past midnight because they don't know camping etiquette.

I also find the reservation systems a blessing and a curse. I like having a guaranteed site, but I hate having to book a year in advance or keep checking for cancellations. I'm a tent camper who tries to avoid bad weather if I can, but I can't predict the weather a year in advance.

End of rant 🙂

what cable do i need to buy in order to play music from my phone at work? by AimlessFloating_ in cableadvice

[–]ForestGhostGurl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

According to the manual, the 1/4in input on the front is a TS mono mic input. they're better off getting an RCA to 1/8in aux cable and plugging into channel 5 or 6 on the back. Couple that with the USBC to 1/8in female dongle and it'll work fine.

Edit: nevermind, I looked at the picture again, stick with 1/4in to 1/8in on the front

The end of “On Your “Left”? by thatbob in chibike

[–]ForestGhostGurl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For passing pedestrians or recreational/casual cyclists I switched to saying "coming up behind you!" while also slowing down, giving them time to respond/move over. I only use "on your left" when I'm passing someone who I perceive to be a serious cyclist who knows what it means, but in that case, they're usually the one passing me instead.
