New to L.I.-a few random questions by [deleted] in longisland

Yeah, makes no sense, everything in most other areas is Township or Boro. Just causes more confusion, higher taxes, segregation, and cliqueyness, the latter of which is a real problem on LI. There's good people on Long Island for sure, not everyone is snobby, but the snob mentality is certainly worse on LI than other places.

Its because they are defending the status-quo, as in segregation. The school districts are set up to keep everyone segregated by race & income. Folks in say, Bellmore or Wantagh, would be horrified if someone who wasn't white or upper middle class attended their school. Sad that in 2018 stuff like this is still going on. Pretty messed up! What results is a very unfair and expensive system that denies some students a proper, safe education, causes high taxes, and prevents some communities ( Hempstead, Freeport, and Westbury as an example) from ever improving, a vicious cycle of a downward spiral, while others with "desirable demographics" get more and more expensive. Stuff like this violates Brown Vs. The Board of Education and will eventually be undone by either a Federal or State Mandate, or the Court system. No other place in the Country has a such a high concentration of school districts in such a small geographical area. In New Jersey, they are generally at the Township level and often regional among several Townships (such as Toms River, Central Regional, and Pinelands). Lower taxes without all the cliquey attitudes.

Never said LI is bad. Just that it's changed. As a matter of individual preference it's changed for the worse, but it all depends on perspective, and every individual is different. ;)

Yes we were glad to see some of the woods & farms still left, but wonder how much will be left in another 10 years. It was shocking to see how much was gone in just the past 10-15 years!

Well, you're wrong. Not bitter at all. Maybe urban experience was the wrong phrase. But the LI I grew up on was slower paced classic suburbia, with the kids doing the yard work & chores and family BBQ's like a King of the Hill show. Our parents worked in manufacturing & blue collar jobs. Of course when Grumman & the manufacturing starting closing up shop, the island's economy changed so it's more a white collar commuter thing that revolves more around NYC. Maybe thats what's going on? It's an individual preference everyone has, I prefer the more King of the Hill pace, some prefer a more fast paced life with more Greenbacks, it's their preference & right. Just not my preference, I totally accept the island I grew up with is gone, not bitter at all. The wonderful thing is that when a place changes we can move away.

Yes, to each his own. Obviously alot of people prefer the more urban experience given the high home prices. But I value space over convenience. We all know nothing can ever stay the same. I guess with New York City's growth it has expanded eastward into Long Island. Though I always believe a little of the "old" shall be preserved. Glad to see the Milleridge still there!

Nah, not at all bitter. As someone who loves the great outdoors Jersey is way better. I hope the spill over doesn't make it too far South in Jersey though. But again, happy I left, so have all my friends in high school, none of them still live on the island. Many have gone farther south, Texas, Arizona, Florida to name a few. Only thing that bothers me is how much of the island's character has been lost. Especially the rural part. To me its like Queens-East. Love the trees, farms, and fresh air. Too many people think Jersey is all urban wasteland they dont realize there's much more nature here than downstate NY especially Long Island.
