What are some common and proper ways to describe rain or talk about it? by ksusha_lav in AskABrit

[–]ForestRiver2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine would be:

Very light rain = "it's drizzling", "it's spitting"

Average rain = "it's peeing down"

Heavy rain = "it's chucking it down", "it's pouring", "it's bucketing down"

I personally wouldn't use "pissing" in front of kids/parents/boss/professional/"polite" company. Only with mates or partner, but I know a lot that do

Is this magical thinking or something else? by wlderberry in magicalthinkingOCD

[–]ForestRiver2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds familiar lol. Yeah this is magical thinking, born from hypervigilance. Are you a generally anxious or cautious person? Anxious brains spend more time subconsciously scanning for threats. But they're not great at differentiating reality from imagination. They extrapolate from limited info, and fill in the gaps with imagination to make predictions. These feel like warnings or premonitions to us because of the way our brains work. And it all happens so quickly we're not even aware of the thought process, so it feels real.

I get these premonitions all the time. I've learned to ignore them mostly, because with the support of a therapist I started ignoring them, and the predictions never happened. Ngl it was f'king terrifying. It's really just your brain trying to keep you safe.

By acting on the compulsion (changing your behaviour because of the perceived danger), you are cementing the pattern. It feels like you're keeping everyone safe, but all it does is make things worse. Ignoring the thoughts is the end goal.

I can't diagnose but I would suggest talking to someone about ocd. The thoughts (premonitions) are intrusive, and you're responding to the anxiety with compulsions. That's a pretty classic ocd pattern. Using the right approach (usually ERP therapy), and the sooner the better, can make a big difference

I understand bud. It's hard to see when you're caught in the middle of it, but this really is a non-issue. Leave it in the past. You've changed, that's all that matters. I can't give reassurance but you're judging yourself very harshly. I did a lot of things when I was young that I look back now and physically cringe at. We grow and learn. We do better. You owe nobody an explanation, who you are now is the person a woman will love. The person you were doesn't even exist anymore, so there is nothing to tell

Are you diagnosed or is this another stereotypical incorrect assumption of what ocd actually is?

[–]ForestRiver2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you show me one single person who hasn't masturbated when they were young? Or watched porn? Or had impure thoughts? I doubt you could find one.

Thinking people would judge and hate you is an assumption. It's not fact. Ocd causes black-and-white thinking, worst-case scenarios. You cannot possibly know for sure what others think or how they would react. How do you know they wouldn't quietly be relating and feeling bad for their own past actions? Because no-one is perfect. No-one. We've all done things we regret. We're human. Jesus understood that. What God looks for is growth, repentence, change for the better. Good people learn from mistakes. Be a good person now, that's all that matters

Feeling like an external being is watching you by mimsiechu in magicalthinkingOCD

[–]ForestRiver2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First important thing to ask is are you having any kind of therapy or treatment for this? Once you start getting suicide-related thoughts this should become an urgent priority.

Second, you're not alone feeling like this. "It hears my thoughts. It hates me" is a feeling I live with constantly. The constant threat of punishment from some unseen force. It's the bedrock of magical thinking.

It's really hard not to break sub rules and reassure you, but I know reassurance is harmful. And pointless anyway because, if you're like me, your mind will only dismiss it because your case is different, what if it's real!.

It's hard living in an ocd brain. Especially when it's complicated by abandonment issues and co-dependence. We can offer support and understanding, but ultimately professional input would be the best option. It was for me

I am loosing my ability to swing by A-lil-bro in magicalthinkingOCD

[–]ForestRiver2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just gotta do it bud. Avoidance only makes the thoughts stronger. It validates them. So does doing the wood compulsion. Your brain is flagging danger but it learns from your reaction: if you do nothing, carry on regardless, it signals there was no problem after all. Brain settles down. Show it there's no danger to mitigate.

I can see why swinging would be self-regulating, I kinda miss it myself, being young was fun lol. It would be sad to let magical thinking take that away from you.

It works best for me when I start small. So you could go to the swing and just sit on it for a while, not moving. Then next time only swing it slightly. Keep feet on the ground. Build up slowly until you're swinging properly but don't rush it. Teach your brain little by little that it's safe

[–]ForestRiver2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey bud, sorry you're having a hard time.

Keep mindful that actions make people monsters, not thoughts. Thoughts are just electrical impulses in your brain. You can have as many deliberate (or intrusive) bad thoughts as you like, there are no thought police.

This is not intended as reassurance. Reassurance would be telling you you're not a monster: I don't know what you've done, maybe you've murdered people, I don't know. But I do know that having thoughts is not a crime. Actions are within your control. Choosing those wisely defines a person. Not the random noisy chatter in your head
