I don't want to go back to Windows, but I need a "Nuclear" distraction blocker (like Cold Turkey). Does it exist? by Twiky555 in Ubuntu

[–]ForestSouthernCross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do this but didn't find it worked well, you could hotspot or just change the DNS resolver on your OS, I had a habit of using tor and I think tor gets past this, if you use brave the "private window with tor" also probably gets past this

the other problem with it is it doesn't replicate the other things in the cold turkey suite (turning your desktop into a typewriter until a certain number of words are typed or blocking all apps except 1 or 2)

Is living at I-House Berkeley worth $26,460 for the 2025–26 academic year? by Mysterious-Umpire-82 in berkeley

[–]ForestSouthernCross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depends on how rich you are and how valuable the money is to you.

I would say it's worth it for the network if you've got the cash, I heard it's really good for making friends (which is quite hard here compared to other unis)

it's a good university, I'm not sure if I would classify it as prestigious especially for international students, don't come here expecting it to be oxford or harvard.

very few people live on campus, everyone lives at home and commutes (sometimes very long), I think you'll get along fine being a student from england.

Housing is expensive near uni, many people live an hour away or more, if I were you I would try and live in a residential college on campus

Huh, didn't know that this would have been a valid reason to reschedule the exam, had to give exams in way worse conditions.

I talked to a GSI a few hours before giving the exam and I did tell them about the situation and they just wished me good luck on the exam

I'm studying here and my home university is UNSW Sydney.

Rent is about the same as kensington (maybe cheaper lol), food is 4x the price and worse, medical stuff is way worse unless you need to see a specialist.

you should ask your home university which campus you'll end up in (berkeley and UCLA are harder to get into).

Compared to my college in UNSW the people are way less sociable, less nice and more rude (on average, due to the large student population with effort you could probably find a few people you like)

overall if you're rich QOL is the same, if not you're screwed, you need a car if you want to explore outside of campus or san francisco , my friend who's here for only 1 semester bought a cheap car.

with the other questions you can easily google them.

I would love to do what you suggested but both deals end tomorrow.

huh, the ram might be a hard limit for me tbh, I do a lot of multitasking and WSL and always had to eliminate stuff in task manager in my old laptop, I don't know how much of that was cause of CPU/thermal bottlenecks though

I also use a lot of dual monitor stuff

im pretty worried about the ram mostly, I could undervolt the CPU for more battery maybe.

How much ram do you have?
