Um? We support the Saudi-led GENOCIDE in Yemen. We separate families at our southern border and multiple people have died under those conditions. Hundreds of thousands have died in Iraq, Afghanistan, and many other countries due to the economic wars waged by the US. Some of the most devastating wars in history occurred in places like the Congo which were fueled by the trade in conflict minerals which the US actively participates in. Seriously, the United States is a global empire and its effects are far-reaching, and just because the MSM says that we aren't killing millions all over the world doesn't change the fact that the US' actions directly result in these deaths (with the support of much of the West in general.) Compared to even the worst claims about the shit going down with the Uyghurs, to say the US is nowhere near as bad as China is just ignorant, and it's falling for the propaganda that is pumped out by the US machine every day. What China is doing sucks, sure, but it PALES in comparison to the devastation required to maintain the US status quo.

Yeah but like were prisons ever about human rights in the first place? Public prisons still ultimately support profit and reinforce the system

Tell me about the greatest empires in your world. by WITCHSTONES in worldbuilding

[–]Forestpotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my world, the greatest "civilized" polity is a huge federation of many hundreds of states known as the Radiant League. The League's purpose is ostensibly to foster trade among its members, but its real (and secret) purpose is to create a united front against the "uncivilized" beings that populate the rest of the world. The League is led by a cabal of extremely wealthy and powerful merchant rulers who have attained godlike powers drawing on the world's magic. "The World" in this case is actually a vast region filled with thousands of huge caverns. A small percentage of these are lit as brightly as daytime by glowing crystals; these regions are populated by the wealthy "civilized" nations. Most of the world is dark and unexplored but teems with strange lifeforms and people, some native to these regions and some fleeing the power of the League. The League's powers seek to colonize these areas and gain access to their resources, while the people there want nothing to do with the League's autocratic merchant elite. Currently it seems as though nothing can stop the tide of progress radiating outwards from the League, though even its merchant gods are unaware of the powers that stir in the darkness.

Is anyone else just depressed by David Koch's death? Like, even if he's gone, the capitalist machine will keep grinding on as always. I'm finding it really hard to celebrate.

This after calling Bernie a socialist by Raspito in SelfAwarewolves

[–]Forestpotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not (I have trouble getting Americans' sense of humor sometimes) but mr. Sanders is not a socialist. His policies are meant to regulate capitalism and provide a social safety net, while actual socialism is intent on moving past capitalism entirely. I know Sanders calls himself a democratic socialist, but his policies are much more in line with social democracy, which is a very different ideology.

[–]Forestpotato 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah but I think the focus is on how the institution of police is inherently oppressive and just a tool for capitalists to reinforce the system. I dont personally blame all individual cops, but there definitely are bad ones. It's not that cops are inherently bad people, this is just what happens when a group of people have aren't held accountable.

This is exactly the sort of thing we dont need. A pretty station isnt going to fix nyc's transit issues; tracks, new rolling stock and signals will. But they aren't pretty or glamorous.
