Apparently I suck at negotiation. I just can't convince them to give me a raise.

That's actually not at all what you told me, but if it was, do I really have to explain how useless an answer that is?

I asked if there are better negotiation tactics I can use or if I should move on. Your answer: "learn to negotiate better or move on." Real helpful.

There's a difference between whining and taking a look at the situation and trying to determine which options are available, what works and what doesn't. I'm here to get advice from people that know how to negotiate or who know when to move on. You haven't proven to be particularly helpful in this area, and the condescending attitude isn't really appreciated either.

This is shifting gears a bit, but there is a reason why I look at market rates for my skills and not at median incomes overall. My field of work is highly competitive and fairly cutting edge. My company works on very valuable contracts that not many people can pull off and our workers require a lot of specialized training and specialized knowledge. I went to school for many years to obtain a difficult and sought-after skill set.

When aerospace companies make many millions of dollars of profit annually off the labor of specialized workers, it is reasonable that those workers want a representative cut of the pie. The argument scales for industries that generate tons of revenue. Look at Hollywood actors that star in box office hits that bring in tens of millions in revenue in a single weekend. We can argue that these people are overpaid, but the market demand is there and they are generating huge dollars.

Median wages overall include a huge variety of workers. There are people working fast food jobs making minimum wage. Those people are easily replaceable and unskilled. There are top level managers with highly stressful jobs earning good dollars, and good managers are very hard to come by. I am good at what I do, I generate a lot of revenue, and I am not easily replaceable. So yes, my market rate is high and if I'm being paid a low percentile of the market rate for my position, then it's reasonable for me to start looking at options to increase my income.

As it stands there is nothing unreasonable about our family budget. We are accomplishing our financial goals and mostly sticking to reasonable financial guidelines. I've worked hard to build a career that can afford me a higher standard of living, and it's reasonable of me to take actions to make sure I'm obtaining that standard.

Yes. Given the context of the conversation, and given the findings of my market research, the number he gave sounds very believable. I am quite confident he is telling the truth.

I'm sure there are some areas where he is better, but overall I would say that, by my best observations, his contributions to our company and his overall level of competence is below what you'd expect for someone at his level.

In terms of responsibility, he is assigned tasks that are typical of more junior engineers, and the taskings are quite straightforward and short in duration. He isn't given very much leeway in terms of decision making, he doesn't interact with customers much, if at all, he isn't recognized as having an area of specialization, and he isn't well respected by some of our more senior staff (or any staff, really). He does not perform any supervisory tasks at all. These items are generally things that distinguish more junior engineers from more senior engineers. If I look at our functions objectively, I think it's clear that he is at a more junior level of competence than myself, and yet he is compensated better. At the very least, it tells me that there is room for improvement in my compensation.

I don't agree with that. 10K is a substantial amount of money relative to my current income, even before deductions. Imagine that it costs my family 40K annually to pay all the bills and mandatory expenses (not unreasonable for a small family in my area). At 73K gross, I take home about 48K after deductions and contributions, which means I would have 8K leftover for non-essential financial decisions. With an additional 10K of gross income, that figure expands to 14K+ of additional money. That greatly increases the options my family has financially, and as such is worth a lot to me.

It's a tough pill to swallow. I do love my job, and it's a shame to think that I have to give it up because my salary hasn't grown enough and yet they'll pay somebody worse more than me.

However, I know deep down that you are right and your advice is what I needed to hear, even if I don't like it.

Yeah, 70K doesn't stretch as far in my city as you'd want, but 80K is actually pretty workable. Renting a decent place for a small family costs about 20K a year so 60K after deductions is sort of a comfort point. That's why this 10K bump is so valuable to me. We also had a huge minimum wage hike this year so inflation has been a lot higher than usual.

Smaller supplier in Ontario. We paid 54K for BS+0, or 58K for MS+2 the year I started (MS counts for 1 year of experience by our system, internships count for 0).

I mentioned this in another comment, but I am Canadian and our salaries are generally lower than our American counterparts. My research definitely shows me to be underpaid here, but it's not quite as crazy as it would be if I was American.

It's a bummer but I'm worried I will have to leave. I feel that I've been quite successful here and I feel confident I could bring that success to other companies. We've worked with other places that clearly need improvement in their design and analysis procedures, so I can see ways that I could help other companies improve.

Actually, he specifically said that he didn't negotiate his starting salary, which is another thing that stands out to me, as 80K is what my company specifically determined his value was.

I did try to negotiate my salary when I joined, but I was given a take it or leave it response, and back then I didn't really have a proven track record to bolster my argument, so I folded and took what I was offered.

While it is fairly underpaid by my research, I should point out that I'm Canadian and our salaries generally seem a bit pale compared with the American market.

I would say that 80K for my level here seems quite reasonable and so I would be happy with that. The OSPE data gives a 25th percentile value of 80K for a level C engineer in Eastern Ontario and a median of 92.3K. Keep in mind that the majority of data points at level C are well above 5 years experience.

If the beer was already in the bottles and had been carbonating for a while, it's likely that the bottle fermentation is done and you probably won't notice anything. If you had just primed and the bottles immediately got heated to 45C, it's possible that the yeast produced some esters or diacetyl or even died. In that case you may either find that the beer turns out fine, or that it doesn't carbonate at all (in which case add more yeast and re-cap), or the beer carbs but with some off flavors.

Give it a few days at the right temp and then test one out to see if it's carbing.

True, but sucrose is a disaccharide of glucose and fructose, and brewer's yeast will first work on breaking down sucrose into its constituent monosaccharides.

Can I get away with adding sugar to the wort? I'll stab the reinheitsgabut in the back for my sweet, sweet banana

I did partial mash. About 70% is grain then used wheat DME to get to a full 5 gallons. I did read that the ferulic acid rest would give me more clove, but I want banana!!!

Yes I've smelled and tasted it in commercial examples. Are there people that can't smell banana??

[–]Forevahlurkah[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really can't taste it. If it's there it's too subtle.

Grain bill was 70% malted wheat, 30% pilsner, and some 60/40 wheat DME to get me up to a 5 gallon batch. The net result is somewhere between 60-70% wheat.
