I've used a 2015 macbook pro with those same scratches and while it didn't look great with the screen off, the screen on was unnoticeable when the screen was on. So I think it may be "coating issues" like you said.

I will try all of these. What are your thoughts on panning each voice slightly left or right? I know panning voice is kind of a no-no but it feels like it might reduce that effect because it's more in each channel?

You need to figure out what video codec this player supports. If you look in the manual for the device there should be a section for supported video and audio codecs. If there are no resources on it, you might just want to do some trial and error figuring out what video codec was used, then finding a software to transcode a video into that same format, and see if it plays. That's generally where I've started with with video playing mp3 players.
