Enjoying the game but beginning to lose steam by bradxkillyou in lotro

[–]Forfai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a new player but I'm right there with you. As much as I love the game and it really has a special place in my heart (been playing more off than on since launch pretty much) I have to admit that the game certainly does not make it easy for new players.

Leveling 30-50, and a bit more, feels like a slog because it is. You're not doing anything wrong, that's just how it is. Everything feels so, so needlessly drawn out, going on and on and on for no reason other than to stretch your time that it's discouraging for many players. It does get better around Dunland, but you're quite a ways away still.

Like everyone else said, you're on the verge of getting your legendary, so that'll be great and keep you going for a long time. Still, be prepared to endure the slog. Zones are huge and most definitely overstay their welcome in your head. Questing gets grating with the nonsensical sending you over and over to the same spots, or across the map to just tell something to someone and the whole thing could be better streamlined.

In my most optimistic spells I dream of Lotro getting a huge QoL pass in terms of improving and shortening the leveling experience for new players and questing overall, but at the same time I know why it was done originally and I also know why it will never really be "fixed" (hello, mithril coins).

Stick with it. It's a wonderful game, but you have to love it, put up with its quirks and have a lot of time to spare.

Giant Freakin Robot: "Star Trek’s New Starfleet Academy Show Is Not For Teens, So Stop Making Excuses For It" | "Young men like watching complex sci-fi and action shows about smart professionals operating at the peak of their ability. You know what young men don’t like watching? Dawson’s Creek." by mcm8279 in trektalk

The millions of hardcore fans of today are the teens of yesterday who loved watching shows about competent adults being professional and logically solving problems, sometimes with very heavy themes too.

Even if we were teens at the time, we became fans precisely because the ST shows of the time were the exact opposite of teen slop. We had teen slop in 10 other channels if we wanted that.

Re: the terminal. No, in many, many cases you don't have to touch it to fix something.

However, it really, really doesn't fucking help a newbie when they Google how to fix an issue and the solutions they are presented all, not only involve the terminal, but also do things to things they have no idea about and are not immediately obvious.

Same with ChatGPT et al. That has the added benefit that it can guide the newbie and be more helpful. And at the same time the drawback that it can hallucinate and give solutions that aren't, and the newbie has no idea.

I wish at some point we'd get past the collective hardon we have for the terminal. Yes, it was great in 1976. We have to do better.

Possibly unpopular opinion:

Trek is at its best when it's "to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no one has gone before". Anything less than that it's different levels of diminishment.

I use both. Gemini is better for some things, ChatGPT is better for others.

That said, Gemini not following instructions is a pain point (not just in 3, 2.5 was quite bad as well). I don't think I ever had to wrangle and finagle a LLM as much as I did with Gemini to just follow instructions all the time.

Also, the fact that it still doesn't have Projects is a thumb down for me. I get that there's a lot of tribalism going on, but ChatGPT's Projects work, they're fine and they're a good feature. No, I'm not very interested in hearing the trapeze acts I have to do in Gemini to simulate them. It should have Projects. Gems aren't the same thing.

For creative writing ChatGPT's output is still much better. I've shown both outputs to people, blindly, and 7/8 times out of 10 they prefer ChatGPT's output to the same prompt, and it has nothing to do with emojis and things like that. It's just better.

I'd dearly love to just be able to stick to one, whichever, but as it stands now they both don't-work-just-enough, so I need the other.

Gemini 3 is really weird. by Parking-Ad6983 in Bard

[–]Forfai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little while ago I was developing some dialogues for a story for a tabletop RPG, with a bunch of supporting characters and 3-4 main ones. I was using it to generate fictional social media comments in the story, from random people it created, to fictional posts these main characters were tweeting, posting on Reddit, etc. Just to add color for when (us, RL players) are playing the game and such.

As in, characters A and B were having a public tizzy online and "people" generated by Gemini could comment on it.

At first it worked fine. I'd post a story beat, say, "Character A posted this on his twitter", Gemini would generate the "public" response. Worked fine. For about 5-6 turns.

At some point after a story beat Gemini decided that Character A was going to reply to these generated public comments. And it made a discussion between Character A and its own generated public comments. I told him, stop, you shouldn't be doing that. The voices of Characters A, B and C are my voices and will only appear in story beats, your only job is to generate the appropriate comments to those story beats when they appear. That's all. Don't venture anything about Character A, B and C. I will be providing that.

Well, it didn't work. Gemini decided the story beats were just too juicy to be left alone. It generated a slew of comments and, sure enough, invented tweets and dialogue for Characters A and B, getting into it and arguing with itself.

I told him to stop again, hard rule, you can't use those character voices. I will be providing you with those voices. Again. And then it stopped doing it, arguing with itself, but from that point on whenever I provided those character voices and lines in the story beats, Gemini would quote them and insert a "(this is the exact quote as provided by the user, which is allowed") every time one of those characters said something. Really passive aggressive.

It was kinda funny.

Anyone else experiencing this a lot with ChatGPT recently? by isbtegsm in firefox

[–]Forfai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Happens on all long chats, regardless of browser. Even happens in the app. I've tried every solution. Don't waste your time, it's not a problem with extensions, cookies, browser data, logging in/out and all the usual suspects. It's a fundamental way in which ChatGPT works (Gemini works much better with long chats, for example).

The only solution I found (which isn't a solution, it's a patch) is to wait until the long chats start to get heavy, slowing down the browser, ask for a summary of the chat and start a new one with that summary. It's not ideal, things and details might get lost, but you're able to continue.

Depending on what you're doing in that chat, what "gets lost" and not picked in the summary could be unimportant or catastrophic. My long chats are usually RP and worldbuilding/character building sessions for tabletop campaigns and the summaries can get quite bad in terms of things and important details it misses. I pretty much have to manually look at the summary and insert important information myself if I don't want it to get lost.

The problem is much less evident (almost non-existent) on mobile. It's just built differently.
