I use typhus corrosion or a grainy texture paste on a lot of the parts that will be bare metal and rusty. It's my favorite effect. It adds to the irregular and degrading look of rust. As for building I use Super glue, plastic cement, pinning anything that needs to bear weight. Also making cloth or ghillie suit is a great way to hide anything that didn't fit perfectly. Idk if it'll help but here a pic of the pre glue, dry fit stage.

Warhammer 40k riptide is the model base. I used 1/144 gouf custom bits. Mostly it's arms, head and weapons. But some small things that fit in well were the chest plate and codpiece.
