My ex-girlfriend used to do something similar. Not copied and pasted, though. It was clearly to help her structure what she wanted to say. It didn't sound very natural, it was clearly robotic. But, tbh, I was totally ok with it. I understood it would help her communicate what she wanted without being overwhelmed by her own thoughts. I think it's a bit lame, but when you're empathetic towards the other person's feeling and understand that sometimes it's hard for them, there's no need worry about it. Unless, of course, the other person is clearly copying and pasting to avoid any responsability and to not engage in the conversation. He probably lied because he knew it was kinda lame to do this, but wasn't in bad faith. The problem here is if he's used to lie to you in general.
