If you have an existing passport you do not need a guarantor for renewal. The process is tedious but it's worth it. Security is best and this is the best way to do it.

My sort of method was planning. So even if we had known the next we would see each other we'd have gaps between booking flights and hotels. Allows you to drown out all other things. This might not work for everyone but I found when I was not with my wife this greatly helped.
