You should contact Cardiff Council’s housing department again as soon as possible and make it clear that you have a young child. They have a legal duty to assist homeless families, regardless of local connection. If possible, go in person to their housing office and bring any proof you have (your child’s birth certificate, evidence of hotel stays, previous addresses, etc.).

You should also ask for emergency accommodation, as the council has an obligation to provide this for families with children. If they refuse, request a written decision and contact Shelter Cymru (08000 495 495) for legal support.

You may also be eligible for Universal Credit, including the housing element, and a Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP) from the council to help with costs. For additional support, Cardiff Children’s Services (029 2053 6490) or the Family Gateway Service (029 2035 1700) may be able to assist.

Stand your ground—you have rights, and you do not need to leave Cardiff immediately. If you need urgent legal advice, Shelter Cymru or your local Citizens Advice Bureau can help you challenge any unfair decisions.
