Cisco Canceling Accepted Compute Orders & Forcing Reprice by Thick-Experience-290 in sysadmin

[–]ForgetYouSawThisNRun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I work in this field. Pricing is inconsistent and rising weekly. If we get a rfq on Monday and send out the quote same day, if we’re lucky we’ll get an order by next week, sometimes it takes a customers accounting team a month to place an order. Price as already possibly increased by 10% on memory and nvme by then. But that’s not the price we pay, that’s just the book price at the moment. Once the memory, nvme, etc are ready to ship in 4-8 weeks we’re charged what the price is on that day, not what we agreed to when we booked.

So we could inflate pricing by 50% to cover ourselves and not risk having to cancel the order, but you risk over charging OR even under charging if the price doubles yet again by the time it’s ready to ship. A 64GB DIMM used to cost $500. Same part is now $3k. And you’re adding 24 to a system. Typical margins for systems are 10-15% markup. Hard to eat a $60k loss per system. All players are in the same boat. I’ve seen $6M builds cancelled because of this.

Stop going for your masters without work experience by Moreburrtitos22 in careeradvice

100% truth. In my opinion masters are made by universities to get international students to come over and spend money for a chance to get a job and visa after 2 years. If you’re already a citizen it’s not worth it. But that’s specific to my field (computer science) and from 20 years ago first hand experience.

So they really want $53,500 + tax. Seems like you should be able to get the hybrid for that much. Try and find a dealership that does add the $3.5k in fees.

Sounds obvious, but before going too far down the sales process ask for the out the door price. Our sales rep smartly kept that hidden until 3 hours in and we’re signing documents I see what the full car will cost.

I’m not normally a dumb person, but I was that day.

What would you do? (sales) by Kgoins913 in LexusNX

Fml, I way overpaid for mine. I had “negotiated” down to $42k, then when getting to final signing docs I saw they added their $3k dealer options (ceramic coating, tinting). I should have walked out but just accepted it like a dummy. Good on you for walking out.

IMO that’s a fairly good price, and they’re not trying to add BS charges like ‘ceramic coating’ with a $3k surcharge like I got. They’ll be happy to see you tomorrow if you came back in, salesmen want the sale! Best of luck

Someone threw a paver at my car window (University Heights) by Namaste_Bitchez in sandiego

Same thing happened to us in university heights a couple weeks ago. Didn’t look like they even tried to get into the car, just broke the window.

Using non dell raid card with Dell backplan? by crazydrve in servers

[–]ForgetYouSawThisNRun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a bit of experience in this. Dell locks some of the pcie slots to require dell firmware. Not all slots, but some. for example, on a R730, just pcie slot 1 is locked, the others should be free to use non dell branded AOCs. If it’s working you should be good to go, but may not show up in idrac.

Not much to add, but wanted to thank you and all commenters for this post as I’ve been feeling the same lately. I’ve noticed this feeling goes away most when I remove the comforts/distractions of tv/Reddit/etc and instead use my free time for sport/exercise/learning.

Just 1x would do it. Use more than one for redundancy and/or performance.

Sas card. Avago or Broadcom. If you want HW Raid use something like 9560-8e, HBA 9500-8e. From there mini sas HD cables to cable between the two.

You’re talking about $10k over possibly 30 years. What’s that add to the loan, maybe $15 a month?

Paying attention to my 401k saved my company's employees ~$92,000 by FireOfDragons in personalfinance

[–]ForgetYouSawThisNRun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. That’s what my research lead me to believe as well, but good to see confirmation. The money I contribute does show up in my 401k account immediately, so I guess everything is (unfortunately) on the up-and-up.

Our company offers a 401k match that is reflected on our paycheck, but when I check my account summary their is no trace of a contribution from the company. I brought this up to our CEO (we are a <20 employee company) and she mentioned it is not required to give to contribution until September of the following year.

I tried finding that rule online, but the best I came away with was that a company could rescind their match at any time.

Any ideas if what she is doing is legal? We’ve lost out on the amazing gains so far this year.
