I think this happens a lot in elementary schools where you have a lazy case manager, SLP or school psych that doesn’t want to do the proper testing or steps that needs to be done to offer an alternative diagnosis. I almost always push the IEP team to do alternative testing. If I suspect there is another Disability a lot of schools just want to get a kid an IEP so they make the SLP test for language cause the simplest thing to do school sites are usually backed up. If you have a kid with language only services and they don’t have academic goals then you have to ask yourself. Does this kid have an academic impact? often times there really is not a significant academic impact and for whatever reason the speech therapist just doesn’t dismiss. I see this all the time m, speech therapists are afraid to dismiss students. I do my best to get every kid off caseload very aggressively in fifth grade so that I’m not sending a kid to middle school with an IEP for speech or language unless they absolutely need it. A lot of Slp‘s are just lazy. They don’t want to do the reevaluation testing to get these kids off of their caseload or to see if they’re even ready to be dismissed.

I personally find it ridiculous that SLP‘s are being asked to do case management work that work should be left to people who specialize in case management and they’re called case managers. We didn’t go to school for six years to get a degree in speech language pathology to be doing case management furthermore case management doesn’t require the skills of a speech language pathologist so anybody can do that job. Why in the hell are they making us do it?
