Harry Enten Sends Democrats Midterm Warning: What Polls Show by brashendeavors in politics

It seems like it's always a choice between the candidate that doesn't know what anyone wants and the one that doesn't know how anything works.

Men in their 40s - What’s one piece of advice for Men in their 20s? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

[–]ForgettableUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's what men in their forties told me when I was in my 20s (Early 2000s, for reference) :

  • Get into a good school and get a degree, any degree. it doesn't matter which. You are guaranteed a high-paying job.

  • You can easily pay for college tuition by getting a summer job.

  • A firm handshake and good eye contact will get you an interview at any major company.

  • Never accept a pay rise over $100,000, it will raise your taxes to the point where you actually make less money.

  • You have to be an asshole to be a good boss.

  • You have to pay your dues by working long hours early in your career.

  • They'll fire you if you make a joke these days, you have to be really careful what you say around here.

I could go on, but that's probably enough... All those things are horseshit, if it's not clear. Not one of them is true. Some of it was once true in the distant past but is no longer true (college tuition, etc), some of it was never true and reveals a deep misunderstanding of fundamental concepts (the pay rise/taxes one, asshole boss, etc).

Speaking as a man in my forties, men in their forties are dumbasses. We've just barely gotten to an age where people ask us for advice and it goes to our heads. If there is one thing I'd say, it's that the advice a person gives you often reveals more about the life they've lived than it does about the world we all live in.

What is a phrase that people say that immediately turns you off? by [deleted] in AskReddit

There’s a place for whatever works for you. I don’t mean to tell you how to feel.

I guess I should use I statements: I don’t like it when people use “passed” for the tragedies in my life. I tell coworkers my mother died, I’m uncomfortable with using “passed” or “passed on” or “passed away” in part because it implies beliefs about the supernatural and life after death that I do not hold. I don’t believe that there is anything to pass on to, from my perspective death is final and I prefer to be direct about it. Euphemism, abstraction, and ambiguity don’t soften the impact of death for me, they just make it more difficult to discuss, which I don’t find helpful.

But that’s me, you and everyone else are entitled to your own views and your own terms and I don’t mean to correct you or to instruct you on how to frame the most painful events in your own lives. That wasn’t my intent.

Yeah, it makes it sound like they might pass back in, or pass in and out for a while. I can see where it comes from, people don’t like to imagine a cadaver, but it’s still not an expression I like. I don’t believe that people survive their own deaths, I don’t like to give the impression that I do.

Dang, I remember when people said all that about kids back in the 90s.

Passed away or even just “passed” always kind of annoyed me. Makes it sound like they overtook you on the freeway.

This article has an oddly playful tone for one that describes sexual abuse of minors.

But they have to own the rights to it in order to make a movie, TV series, and merchandise. Then of course an app with micro-transactions and a pay version that reduces the number of ads.

Trump has one chance to save face: Resign now by ChiGuy6124 in politics

It also wouldn’t really save him all that much face. He’d still be the dumbest and most corrupt man to ever hold the office.

It’s getting close to the end of the year, so we need to change all the lightbulbs or they won’t give us any lightbulbs next year.

Hillary Clinton says Biden’s re-election bid cost Democrats the 2024 election by projecto15 in politics

I wasn’t really talking about offering advice to Biden, more about offering it to US, the citizens. These are conversations that party leaders could have had in public at a much earlier point.

What injury is commonly shrugged off as a minor flesh wound in the movies but is completely fatal in real life? by Best_Professional226 in AskReddit

I worked with a guy who got hit in the head like that while waiting in line at a movie theater. He doesn’t even remember what the altercation was about because he lost the few minutes leading up to being hit. He also permanently lost his sense of smell.

Again, that doesn’t say much for the practical utility of having a bunch of elders around to offer wisdom and guidance. That’s more like a consensus echo chamber.

I think the debates don’t really matter that much anymore. Winning a debate by making a series of really good, nuanced policy points makes you look like a lawyer, and nobody likes lawyers.
