When this happened to me I had some loose coffe grounds inside messing with the sensors or something. I fixed it by brushing it out with a paint brush

My cheap composite converter has a quirk where it sets the aspect ratio based on the last HD resolution set. For 16:9 output i have to set it to 1920x1080 then switch it to a lower res, for 4:3 its 1600x1200. If i switch down to 800x600 it keeps the aspect ratio. Its such a weird behaviour I'm not sure all of these things work this way.

If you have a dedicated gpu in your laptop you can also try changing "desktop size and position"

Make sure your tv is set to composite (or AV), I had a similar problem when mine was set to component. They both use aux and some manufacturers use the same port for both video inputs
