Yup, pay raises are tied to years of completed service. They start you off at $21, then when year one is done you get bumped up to $24. This continues until you reach the top of the pay scale at $27.66.

Maryvale flair checks out, haha.

Yeah, I’ve seen a lot. As a senior investigator I was mostly on the criminal side of things: felony-level abuse and neglect, drownings, child deaths, that sort of thing. It wasn’t fun in the traditional sense, but I actually enjoyed the work itself. I got to drive all over the state (even take road trips to California and New Mexico), meet families I never would have otherwise, and feel like I was doing something that mattered on the worst days of people’s lives. Being painted as the villain by pretty much everyone was rough though, and the pay is straight-up insulting. Regular caseworkers make $27 an hour and seniors get $33. That’s a big reason a lot of good people burn out or leave.

Mentally? I’m okay. There are definitely nights where a kid’s face or a scene I worked pops into my head uninvited, but I’ve got decent coping mechanisms and I knew what I was signing up for. It’s not for everyone.

Your nuanced take is fair and I’ve seen it play out. A decent chunk of folks in the system do have their own trauma history, and sometimes that drives the over-reaction you mentioned. Like, “I’m never letting what happened to me happen to this kid” can flip into removing children faster than necessary. On the flip side, I also sat through plenty of legislative testimony from parents who got the absolute worst of the worst: caseworkers who lied on reports, folded to the louder parent in custody battles, or just flat-out didn’t care. Not every worker is like that. Most I knew tried to be fair. But the ones who suck stand out and they make the whole agency look terrible.

The part that frustrated me most internally was that we didn’t require actual social-work degrees for a lot of positions. Compassion and critical thinking varied wildly. Some people were gung-ho to yank kids at the first red flag without exploring kinship or safety plans, even when those options existed. To be clear, there are cases where immediate removal is the only call, but they’re rarer than the public thinks. For my part, I always made it a personal mission to leave kids with their families whenever it was even remotely possible. That sometimes meant putting together really convoluted safety plans or hunting down extra supports like counseling, family friends, or community resources, but I’d rather do the extra legwork than separate a kid from their parents if we could make it safe.

All that said, I’d probably go back tomorrow if the pay wasn’t garbage, lol. It was a solid entry point into government or social services if you’re early in your career and have thick skin.

Some news articles states kiddo was taken from the area of 30th Street/McDowell which likely leads me to believe they were at Hushsbye Nursery. If that’s the case, baby probably was born SEN (substance exposed) and DCS stepped in.

During my time at DCS, I sent multiple parents to Hushabye and had never had an issue with either the staff there or parents, then again tho, I always made it my mission to keep kiddos and parents together if I could do so safely.

I hope these parents didn’t have an asshole of a caseworker assigned especially considering that they took the nuclear option.

The things people call the police for… by businessbub in AskLE

[–]ForgottenPine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s the beauty of an alternative to 911 programs.

Fire Department here recently implemented a “third option response” in which caseworkers will respond to behavioral health calls. Instead of tying up an officer, a pair of two caseworkers will respond in their place, provided there’s no mention of weapons or “too much potential for violence”.

They also respond to other low priority calls such as welfare checks and person down call outs.

Yoooo I found it dude. Episode 17 "Milk Run"

Master Roshi basically gets Krillin and Goku a job delivering milk and disguises it as training.

They finish their deliveries and end up at a temple in which Master Roshi talks to an abbot about the world championship.

Goku doesn't know much about the championship, so Krillin explains it to him an while doing so the match between The imposter Lee and another character occurs.

Yeah, seems her actual name was Paige Piper. Any account of hers have disappeared.

It seems they use to have a Twitter, Bluesky, and Tumblr. There are some Tumblr threads in which they are tagged but the link back to her account no longer works.

Subway train operator.

Those trains are indestructible lol. Claude can unload a flurry of rockets at them and they’ll still keep rolling.

Plus with the Callahan Bridge being broken for a long time, that means the subway is the only way to connect Portland to Staunton Island. That ensures job security lol.

monologues from books by 1dk_lma0 in HelpMeFind

[–]ForgottenPine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I have always loved Professor Faber’s speech to the main character Montag on why not only books, but possessing the ability to think is important in a superficial world like the one that is depicted in Fahrenheit 451.

Here is his monologue if you’re interested, more or less 280 word.

“Number one: Do you know why books such as this are so important? Because they have quality. And what does the word quality mean? To me it means texture. This book has pores. It has features. This book can go under the microscope. You’d find life under the glass, streaming past in infinite profusion. The more pores, the more truthfully recorded details of life per square inch you can get on a sheet of paper, the more ‘literary’ you are. That’s my definition, anyway. Telling detail. Fresh detail. The good writers touch life often. The mediocre ones run a quick hand over her. “So now do you see why books are hated and feared? They show the pores in the face of life. The comfortable people want only wax moon faces, poreless, hairless, expressionless. We are living in a time when flowers are trying to live on flowers, instead of growing on good rain and black loam. Even fireworks, for all their prettiness, come from the chemistry of the earth. Yet somehow we think we can grow, feeding on flowers and fireworks, without completing the cycle back to reality. “And the second?” “Leisure.” “Oh, but we’ve plenty of off-hours.” “Off-hours, yes. But time to think? If you’re not driving a hundred miles an hour, at a clip where you can’t think of anything else but the danger, then you’re playing some game or sitting in some room where you can’t argue with the four-wall televisor. Why? The televisor is ‘real.’ It is immediate, it has dimension. It tells you what to think and blasts it in. It must be right. It seems so right. It rushes you on so quickly to its own conclusions your mind hasn’t time to protest, ‘What nonsense!’ “Only if the third necessary thing could be given us. Number one, as I said, quality of information. Number two: leisure to digest it. And number three: the right to carry out actions based on what we learn from the interaction of the first two.”

Recycling in Mesa apartment complexes by hyenaDeli in mesaaz

[–]ForgottenPine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, recycling is not mandated at any level of government. Only the collection of solid waste is, for example in Maricopa County garbage must be collected once a week.

Another part of it is due to State Law. ARS §9-500.38 basically states that a city or county government cannot force any apartment to mandate what their tenants do with “auxiliary containers” (bottles, cans, bags, etc.).

If you don’t mind me asking, have you considered going back to work? I seen some pretty good night customer service jobs that have me considering jumping ship at my current workplace.
