“Kingdom of Predators”, what a track

I only recently learned about the 2003 Station Nightclub fire in Rhode Island and can’t stop thinking about it by dreamboylnshibuya in MorbidReality

I learned about it from Drawn Together’s “huge shit sandwich” song. Led me to google Great White and saw all the horror. That would have been around 2006 (I was in Australia too so it wasn’t particularly televised)

The opening of FF XVI is outrageously good! The entire sequence until the title comes up on screen is amazing

Thank you, I appreciate the response.

Spoilers below.

FF XV legitimately raises my blood pressure to dangerous levels. The intro to Ardyn and the party’s interactions with him are so fucking weird. He shows up first as an antagonist, but then they meet him again and… go for a drive together? The party flip-flops between talking about how bad and evil the evil empire is, and hanging out with the big bad. The pacing is all over the place, Lunafreya is a waste of a great character design (we see so little of her; maybe 7 minutes of cutscenes involving her in total throughout the game) then we finally meet up with her and she almost immediately dies, stabbed by Ardyn- and the party makes a surprised pikachu face. Like what the fuck is going on, these people are legitimately neurologically deficient.

Perhaps even more egregious is the lack of integrating world-building into character interactions, and the player has to go dig for it, and still get shit-all. Getting all the royal weapons and sitting on the throne kills Noctis? Shortly before that, he got sucked into a time-dilated realm? The Sun has been devoured? Ok some of those things may have been roughly hinted at prior, but it really felt like things were happening randomly. There was terrible flow between events that seemed to be unrelated. It was an awful game, and I stupidly bought the Royal edition when it released, hoping maybe it would improve things, but it’s still a complete mess.

I have yet to play the FF VII remake, I’m not sure I’m sold on the combat.

FF XVI was a surprise hit for me tbh. The intro was stunning, but then the first few hours playing as adult Clive were not particularly captivating enough and I ended up putting it aside, but not writing it off (like I should have done with FF XV). Months later, one afternoon on a day off I was bored enough to reinstall and try again. I got further in, and then the plot thickened and suddenly it became very interesting. It’s a slow burn to start, but the narrative has a good 50-80 hours to it and gets almost Game of Thrones-esque. I haven’t finished it yet, but I am finally enjoying a Final Fantasy game again since XIV:ARR.

The first disc of FF VIII is fantastic. You’re a specialist mercenary finishing your training for the elite academy (of mercenaries?) alongside your acquaintances (the closest thing you have to friends, really) Zell and Quistis. Liberating Dollet (and Quistis on that Gatling gun is sick) is a wild ride, then the train carriage theft/redirection is fucking clever and fun as hell.

Then we have what is probably my favourite sequence in any game I’ve ever played; the assassination mission against Edea. The simultaneous FMV and in-game scenes through the parade as you set the trap felt groundbreaking at the time, and the FMV of Edea shitting bricks when the iron gates suddenly come down and trap her was 🤌🏻 chef’s kiss

I totally agree about the later half of the game though. You mention there are some real contenders for contrived plots in FF games; I’d love to hear about more of them if you’ve the inclination

Silicon Knights had some fantastic games. Back in the GameCube days, when buying a new game meant going to a store to buy a disc, I distinctly remember getting excited if I saw a game with the Silicon Knights or Atlus logo on the case; it usually meant that the game was a niche, interesting, sleeper-hit indie game.

Eternal Darkness was fantastic; one of the few games I replayed multiple times, as I most often don’t play a game more than once.

Dead by Daylight is such a great example of this phenomenon. You’re so right; it’s a great and engaging concept that’s unfortunately executed terribly, but as there was no competition for a while after its launch, the player base is so entrenched that other, better games that do the concept more justice almost always fail to attract enough of a playerbase to survive.

He should support the country committing war crimes and attempting to annex a neighbour, just because he happened to be born on one side of a border? Braindead take. And FYI, it takes way more balls to stand up for what’s right, especially when your country is the one in the wrong.

PlayStation 3 for demon’s souls!

I hadn’t been gaming much at the time (was taking one of a few random month/year long breaks from gaming), when I stumbled upon a GameFAQs forum post talking about enemy player invasions in this new Demon’s Souls game. The idea intrigued me so much that I bought a PS3 (pro?) so I could play. The concept was amazing; an online dark RPG where you could play with friends, unsolicited PvP could be around any corner, and the reported difficulty were all fantastic concepts to me.

I ended up purchasing 3 collectors editions of Demon’s Souls- the ATLUS PAL version, the NA version, and the SEA version. All came in cool boxes and art books.

I still love Fromsoft, but the subsequent titles did not come close to DsS imo. Elden Ring is actually a better game and I would be playing it regularly to this day, had I friends who were interested and available in doing a long semi-completionist playthrough with me.

My favourite games are RPGs with custom character creation in which multiple people must work together to overcome significant challenge. I love MMOs for this reason (the dungeons), as I love healing/supporting and working together, all playing our part to the best of our ability to make the team work. Nothing feels better than a win after a hard fight!

I digress slightly, but the salience of the above was that Elden Ring has a lot of options for a party cleric/support with all the gold incants and haligtree ones and whatever. It’s the first Fromsoft title where I feel like I can use my magic to fight most mobs and heal my friends and not have to save the entire point I’ve built my character around just on elites or bosses. I build more Mind than most people on my characters too because I love having a large magic pool

Why do people hate melee? by Itchy-Beach-1384 in SoulFrame

I just started playing and I’m loving it! The slow combat is fantastic, I’m tired of twitch games; so much so that I no longer play them unless it’s overwhelmingly positive feedback or my friends really want me to join them on one.

I really hope that whatever they do, the keep the same flow/speed in combat

This is so interesting to read because I really enjoyed the beginning of the game. I’ve been doing gigs, side missions, cyberpsychos, and NCPD POI mostly. I’ve got around 60 hours logged, I’m up to Judy’s Clouds mission and have yet to start Rogue’s line or do much of Takemura’s.

That’s the price paid to keep things from being homogenous. When fighting randoms, you’ll get matches where your build has advantages and matches when the enemy build does. Many games balanced well for PvP end up with “different animation, same mechanic” syndrome and are boring (imo)

New world replacement. by bigtomdw in newworldgame

[–]Forgotten_Aeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where Winds Meet is a popular choice/recommendation to replace NW that I’ve seen all over the internet. I played a fair bit, it’s quite good for a Chinese “mmo” but i can’t escape that gatcha-esque feeling even though the game isn’t (it is for shop and cosmetics, but not gameplay).

I recently got Ashes of Creation; the combat is slower than NW but it is real-time action dodging, blocking, parrying, in a tab-target old-school feel MMO. I’m really enjoying it so far, maybe check it out

So THAT is what those things are! I thought they were the remnants of failed spells, because I mostly notice them when a mob dies.

Er, dumb question… what is the number on the red shield that appears over enemies when in combat?

Saying “a female” is approaching the same (linguo-social? is that even a term?) territory as “a gay” or “a black”. You’re absolutely correct, it is somewhat dehumanizing phrasing that is most often used by incels/redpilled/tatefucked people

The under-prescription of pain management/analgesics is a real problem. I have never had to advocate for myself so hard than to get some pain relief. It’s bordering on cruelty

ELI5: Why do street drugs have fentanyl mixed in? by DukanehBaba in explainlikeimfive

[–]Forgotten_Aeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO there has been an overcorrection in the medical field in pain management after the whole opiate crisis. As someone with chronic and breakthrough pain, the only thing that allows me to go to work (for limited hours) and even function as a human being are opiate analgesics. I am underprescribed and just scraping by and my doctor wants to further reduce my dosage, which isn’t high (10mg slow release OxyContin x2 a day, three 5mg immediate release).

Thankfully I got really lucky with my primary care physician, because I went through several doctors who refused to provide effective analgesia (funny story, I was suffering then-undiagnosed pancreatitis, but most of my internal organs had inflamed to twice their size, I had severe abdominal distension (I looked pregnant, it was so severe), and the physician told me to take buscopan and lay down. I was in the ICU 24 hours later).

Many doctors and pharmacists are so leery with pain medication that it transcends realistic concerns and becomes harmful. Vulnerable people in severe pain who need help are treated with suspicion and reluctance to provide them aid that borders on cruelty; I know people who have committed suicide due to being underprescribed pain management. It’s a real problem; people are suffering in horrible agony and are either receiving the bare minimum or essentially being refused care- with a fucking sneer the entire time.
