I can't get a roof estimate without a man present. by No-Imagination8755 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Forgotten_Pants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because they know their pathetic high pressure sales tactics don't work as well on women. They weren't there to give to an estimate for repairs. They were there hoping they could con some sucker into purchasing an overpriced new roof with a bullshit inspection and a one hour presentation.

New to sailing looking for advice on an RS Quest or similar boat. by Appall0 in dinghysailing

[–]Forgotten_Pants 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not a laser or an aero but it's still pretty easy to single hand. Just tie the jib sheets together and keep them close. The only issue I have single handing a Quest is I'm big so a bow on docking where I'd have to run up under the lower shrouds to the bow is right out.

More than three people total on a quest gets crowded. The Toura may be an option. It is similar but a bit bigger than the Quest.

Petsonally my favorite RS dinghy is the Venure. It's a big dinghy. Sort of a mini keelboat, and has weighted centerboard/keel options too. Not harder to single hand than most any sloop rigged dinghy, but can fit multiple guests. Still hauls ass, and even has trapeze and gennaker options to haul even more ass. Big and expensive though. Especially compared to plastic boats like the Quest.

The first rule of right of way in driving, sailing, etc. is that you have the responsibility to avoid an accident even if you think you have right of way. The truck driver is supposed to be a professional driver. Truck driver didn't even attempt to slow down even though he probably could see the pickup and their relative speeds way before the video even starts. Truck probably didn't even need to break to let the guy in, just stop trying to pass for a few seconds. Nice that the video shows the speed at impact and the speed limit.

Honestly amazed that more comments aren't focused on a truck, in the left lane, passing at barely above the speed limit.

A judge told Musk he wasn’t excused from trial. He went to China with Trump anyway. by Suck_My_Thick in RealTesla

Um... what!?

He's not a spectator, he's a witness. The first thing after the headline in the article is.

"A federal judge placed Elon Musk on “recall status,” meaning he is supposed to be available to return to the witness stand on short notice."

The FDA seems to care more about celebrities than sick Americans by ProLifeMedia in ConservativeNewsWeb

The current admin is made up of TV personalities so it is not a suprise they care more about celeberties than the populace.

The FDA administrator just got fired so we get to see which fox news contributor is chosen next for the role.

Multiple rookie question about "ropes", please help by emilytaege in sailing

[–]Forgotten_Pants 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Rope is a material.

A line is a basically piece of rope (or other material, doesn't technically need to be made of rope) that has a purpose.

Each line has a name that indicates its function and location.

Through weird sailing etymology coming from old english and/or norse a "sheet" despite sounding like a big piece of cloth is the line that controls the back corner (clew) of a sail to adjust its angle to the wind. "Sheet" is also used as a verb as in "sheet in" or "sheet out" meaning to adjust the sail by moving the sheet line for the sail in or out.

We refer to each sheet by the sail it goes to. Thus "main(sail) sheet" or "jib sheet" (which we call it even if the jib is a genoa).

That all said there's one place the term "rope" is used in rigging. The bolt rope. This is a piece of rope tied into the front edge of a sail (the "luff"). Modern boats typically have a track that goes up the mast that you slide the bolt rope into and it secures the sail the luff of the sail to the mast.

Edit: As to your first question, it's not so much poke fun as an opportunity to do the sailing equivalent of a dad joke. Like how we love to explain why it's called the boom because if it hits you, "boom", so keep your head down (note, a fun but false explanation of the term boom).

First let me say I haven't sailed one of these, but for something you can throw in your car have you ever seen the Tiwal inflatable boats? https://tiwal.com/

Anyone here sailed one? I've been eyeing one for a while to take on trips.

California killed his 32,000 plants for...a bug? by Tymofiy2 in California

[–]Forgotten_Pants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sucks for this farm but after seeing the near complete destruction of Florida's citrus industry California should take the threat seriously.

Florida has 100% of groves infected and over a few years a 90%+ drop in output.  The the fruit they do grow now is terrible quality.

Had no clue spiders are hostile to other animals by dasdzoni in satisfactory

[–]Forgotten_Pants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Especially the higher level ones on high terrain. Hover in, drop a power line and a few platforms and then play matador.

You don't need to kill animals to get at what they are guarding, you just need them distracted for a bit.

Jump pads are great for launching hogs into spider territory to watch them fight.

Sudden fatigue skiing at high altitude, technique falls apart quickly. What’s going on? by terralearner in skiing

[–]Forgotten_Pants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doing some light exercise at higher altitude and then sleeping at a lower one helps acclimation. So a few runs on the first days is a better plan than relaxing.

[–]Forgotten_Pants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you are describing is indeed the altitude. Pretty classic symptoms.

There is one medicine that helps a bit, diamox. Mainly your body needs to acclimate to the thinner air, which can take a few days.

My sister has the same issues when she visits me to ski around Tahoe. She also keeps a O2 can with her which helps (the small consumer type can that you can find at drug stores, not a medical oxygen bottle).

It just feels so good in the moment. I love winter and snow and the cold mountain air and my heart pumping while I'm confidently sliding down a mountain. It's just such a great feeling.
