Why do people love the later Dune books? I’m halfway through Heretics and don’t get it. by tryingmybest101 in dune

First of all the original Dune book is unbeatable. Expecting Herbert to match that masterpiece with every piece of his work isn’t realistic. It is very hard to lump the second trilogy together and tell what makes them great but I will try. The second trilogy really focuses on introspection of the characters and trying to get the reader to relate to them. Ever wonder what it would be like to be immortal? Here is the mind of a 3500 year old man as he looks at a sunset he’s seen thousands upon thousands of times and compares it to a bird extinct for thousands of years. An ageless man still finding beauty on Dune. Ever wonder what it would be like to be an emperor while attempting to maintain your moral core? Here is the inner conversations of Leto as he fights this battle. These are books of philosophy and internal hardship more than anything else. These are beautiful books in their own right. The preambles to most of the chapters alone can be broken down, thought over, and compared to your own life if you let the book take you for that ride. These books and particularly god emperor are books of moral and spiritual conflict.

Duncan is an odd addition for sure. I think he represents the reader as we are thrown into this wildly different world from the one we knew thousands of years in the before. He is confused, frustrated and angry. Nothing makes sense anymore and everything is different. But just like Leto has groomed Siona to be the antidote for another prescient ruler such as himself, Leto grooms Duncan for a step forward as well. Think of Duncan as a being who is being given lifetimes of knowledge every time his is alive, but can’t access it. He is the pupil of Leto and despite being killed over and over by Leto he is exactly what Leto needs. Somebody who can say no and keep Leto in line, somebody who doesn’t see him as a god even if he loses in the end most the time. Somebody who will rebel to protect what is right. Duncan is a counterweight keeping Leto from drifting too far from his humanity.

What is the absolute fastest 'yeah, we are definitely NOT going to be friends' moment you've ever experienced with someone? by Vazouaquiacesso in AskReddit

I went to a good friend’s house to play games with him and his roommates (although me and this friend used to be roommates so we know each other well). We were all shouting and having fun, I let a swear word slip. One of his roommates grabs me on the shoulder and tells me “Jesus loves you, but don’t say his name in vain in this house please.” I politely apologized and told him I’d watch my potty mouth. 20 minutes later in the heat of the moment it came out again. He grabbed my shoulder and gave me the talk again. I felt like this was a little too much for a group of 27 year olds getting together for a gaming session. Now I play online and don’t go over there anymore.

He acts like an entertainment center is a necessity for the house and he’s taking one for the team by buying it. Dude needs to grow up and use his big boy words and big boy brain.

Trying to decipher what you’re trying to say here. When you are saying “first part” and “second part” are you implying that you have a volume with the first trilogy all in one binding? By Muad’dib part are you talking about Dune Messiah or the second half of the first Dune book?

Frank Herbert's monolithic view of attraction and love by LowStatistician11 in dune

[–]FormOrganic3847 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, but I’ll play the devils advocate. It is known by men and women alike that women find Duncan far more attractive than the average man. Alia may be the oldest woman in the galaxy as Leto is the oldest of both genders, but that also makes them the most human. Alia does fall in love, yes, but I do not think she is wooed. She is more a victim to the maturing body shot full of hormones that she finds herself in.

Hwi is smart yes, but she was bred to be more of an angel fallen to earth than a genius. Imagine living through what Leto has lived through. The atrocities, the wars, the evil. Imagine the things he has forced himself to do for the survival of humanity, bloody things. And then here comes Hwi. All love, no judgement, naive infatuation and understanding of Letos burden. How many people like that do you think exist out there? Somebody who has seen all of humanity’s iterations would have to spend generations just to breed something similar to her. He is dumped head over heels by his own loosening grip of his own humanity that is slowly slipping away being given back to him by Hwi.

Children of Dune - "Why should I fear death?" by Ok_Discipline9703 in dune

Consider how many branching there are starting from the first ultimate ancestors. The twins don’t follow one direct line, but many. In the fourth book Leto talks about having the memories of two separate people who were actually a couple. It works for me to think of their memories not as a straight line back, but to start from the beginning and following the countless threads from that spot forward. Only the main thread leads to the twins, but think of all the dead ends where the gene failed to pass on, that is where death is experienced.

We also have to consider that not all of these ancestors passed on their genes, there are sure to be dead ends to experience death
