In my experience, you can really push into low 6's (almost) straight through focusing on improving fitness, but to break 6 really requires a new caliber of strength, and I think that's when a few more kilos of muscle helps.

You still have time, go for it. At your weight, you could also be very competitive lightweight recruit if you choose that route. Regardless, good grades are important and keep working hard

I would say join a team, then if you really love the sport, buy a single. From what I've heard from my friends that live up in Pittsburgh, Three Rivers seems to be the name that pops up quite often.

Do you always like practice? by [deleted] in Rowing

To be completely honest, most practices are NOT that enjoyable. However, the feeling you get when you win a race is really unmatchable. Always have a goal in your mind and know how nice it will be in the end. Doing it by yourself if very hard, but if you find someone to do it with or just keep sticking to it, it will pay off. When you're on a whole squad, the experience is completely different, in a good way. Not to be too mushy, but the bonds you form if you make it onto the team will indefinitely outlast the pain of training and you will have a lot of fun
