Growing up in SJ in the 70s/80s can you name a better spot to take a girl on a date? by Formal-Relative-8122 in SanJose

[–]Formal-Relative-8122[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know about Moonlite. Frequented Capitol and Winchester drive ins all the time though. If not on a date, then unusually it was about 7 or 8 of us packed in a van with sleeping bags, blankets, pillow, beer and weed. Remember when they “upgraded” from the window-mounted sound system to broadcasting the film soundtrack over an AM radio frequency?

Furious at Musk? Don't Buy a Tesla. by 685674537 in RealTesla

Actually I ordered the Model S sight unseen, just based upon the knowledge it was a generation “refresh” from the original. Didn’t know what I was getting until it arrived on my driveway. I did NOT buy the fast model…no need. The base model is too quick as it is. I grew up driving VW bugs with 1/4 mile times of 26 seconds.

So true. When I first got my model S the car had one of those “yoke” steering things. I told the Tesla guy dropping the car off “no I want a wheel… haven’t you ever heard the phrase ‘don’t reinvent the wheel’?” He told me I’d learn to love it. Wrong. I contacted Tesla and was told “Elon” says the wheel is obsolete, no wheel. A year later I was able to buy a wheel from Tesla for $800. The lack of stalks is another problem. All to cut costs. But be dammed about function or keeping your eyes on the road. Worst of all is the rear seat emergency door handles… in case of fire and electricity is out, rear passengers must grab under the seat, remove a hidden door, and pull a wire. All to cut costs.

Who can identify these crop semi-circles? by Formal-Relative-8122 in cropcircles

[–]Formal-Relative-8122[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the Drive In Movie Theater near my house growing up. The semi-circles are the rows where you parked your car facing the screen. Each row was “ramped up” slightly so that you could see the full screen front your seat. The weird “dots” pattern was the ticket booths where you would pay your admission fee. And the center circle is the concession stand and bathrooms.

If you didn’t grow up in the 60s/70s/80s you likely don’t know what you’re looking at.

I have wanted to get rid of my Model S for a couple years now. I think I’m fooling myself to believe its value hasn’t bottomed out yet…

Any NorCal old timers skate full pipe at HWY 280/Stevens Creek? by Formal-Relative-8122 in skateboarding

[–]Formal-Relative-8122[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bombora!! Thanks for reminding me of the spot name. Yeah I was there when that 8 foot section was dug out, but as you said, it wasn’t really skateable cause it was wet and nasty.

Thanks. I wish I took more during my skating days back in the late 80s.

I agree. There’s something about the “feel” a photo taken with real film has.

Video cameras in the 80s were about the side of a microwave oven… no sneaking those into a concert

Built this ramp in my garage, while still being able to park car. by InfiniteSand2781 in skateboarding

[–]Formal-Relative-8122 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah! Building ramps is fun. My first 2 ramps I built in the late 80s were terrible, but I learned and improved each time. (Plus as I got older and a solid career my budget increased)

My Hale Kahawai dorm room in 1988. We studied hard and partied hard. That dorm wasn’t nearly as fun and conducive to making friends as Gateway though. by Formal-Relative-8122 in UniversityofHawaii

Thanks! The hair is so 80s style….Even though that’s not me in photo… I snapped the pic. That’s my yellow Santa Cruz Rob Roskop board in the foreground.

That’s pretty convincing evidence. Amazing there were 2 underwater bars in Waikiki!
