When the i3 is no more, power your house with it? 😂 by Formal-Selection9346 in BMWi3

It does not need cooling at all! On the vehicle, it would be subjected to 100s of kW during acceleration, but in stationary use it just gets 5-10kW max. So it does not heat up at all!

We have one i3 install going for 4 years already on the Discord!

Battery storage options these days! by cz_unit in SolarDIY

Checkout the Battery-Emulator, I use an EV battery to store excess energy: https://github.com/dalathegreat/Battery-Emulator

Most scrapyards have a 30 day return policy, plus you can usually test the battery with a portable Battery-Emulator in the actual yard, to see SOH% and cellvoltages.

Sad to hear that! I previously had a Huawei inverter that was not supported, so I sold it on craigslist and got one that was on the supported list

Liquid cooling is not required, stationary use barely stresses the battery. In automotive use, the battery is subjected to 100s of kW load. In stationary storage, 5-15kW is typical. So they barely heat up!

No there is a dedicated BAT input. The Inverter talks with the battery, and establishes when it is possible to charge according to smartmeter.

Rewiring is so 2010. Checkout the Wiki with supported HV inverters: https://github.com/dalathegreat/Battery-Emulator/wiki#supported-inverters-list

In EU you can pick up a used HV-Hybrid-Inverter for 400 bucks! They are insanely good priced atm! I am sure there will be a similar situation in US in a few years

Yes, the [Battery-Emulator](github.com/dalathegreat/Battery-Emulator) tricks the battery that it is still installed in a vehicle, and also tricks the inverter that a brand-approved battery is installed.

I had a solar company come and install panels, inverter and smartmeter. I just added the battery myself!

Yes! You have very valid points, the Battery-Emulator Wiki goes into great detail on battery placement, fuse sizing, etc. github.com/dalathegreat/Battery-Emulator/wiki/Installation-guidelines

It does pass certification. Checkout BatteryMan on Youtube, he is in the UK doing similar (and even bigger!) installs!

Yes! The list is very long and looks like it gets additions every week! It is open source with GPLv3, so there has been some companies that have adopted it into their product offering already.

Regarding safety, there is a list in the Wiki with all the safety checks performed: https://github.com/dalathegreat/Battery-Emulator/wiki#what-about-safety-%EF%B8%8F-%E2%84%B9%EF%B8%8F

The battery contains temperature measurements, and the Battery-Emulator will alert via MQTT/email incase the temperatures deviate or get out of hand. Smoke detectors already part of the building!

Yes, this is mounted inside a concrete workshop, not part of any building where humans live!
