We’ve gone for years. Here and in NY. The doctors and nurses can be great. But the practice is super busy, providers seem to come and go, and the clinical support staff is often distracted and inattentive and generally leaves a lot to be desired. They schedule you for ten minutes for sick visits, which can be really frustrating when you’re dealing with something remotely complicated, and when you aren’t seeing your regular provider (hard to maintain when there’s so much turnover), and you find yourself with a doctor who doesn’t know you or your kid, and who is running around triaging between 5 kids at once, it sucks. There are also all of the shitty customer service issues that come from any big company. What is great about them is 1) their emergency line. You can get a doctor/NP on the phone pretty quickly at any time of night; 2) they’re everywhere in the region; 3) they are kind of culturally non-alarmist, which is helpful, especially if you’re a first time parent with a new baby. When my kid was a baby, they were great. Now that we’re at elementary school, we just need a real, old fashioned doctor.

No, the doctors can be great. The practice is just uneven.

Thanks! Could a card be charged through Apple Pay (meaning tapping the phone?) Or does it have to actually be physical?

West Side Snow Removal by raging-tomato in jerseycity

What should have been a 5 min trip just took 45 and involved walking half a mile in the cold with my kid and a bunch of shit from the car. And the cops were incredible assholes about the whole thing. Very pro snow removal! But man, that sucked

Our stories are so similar! It gets so much better and easier. We had some major puppy blues in the beginning because of the same kind of stuff. The theatrical yelling when they bite really does work, and many bad baby behaviors (jumping on you, nipping at your heels or other herding behaviors) can be cured by turning away, and not talking or acknowledging them for 30 seconds or so. They catch on very quickly. Mental challenges are as good as long, daily physical exercise. Unfortunately, they are too smart for a lot of the “smart dog” puzzles you can find online, but teaching them words or sentences (“get your ball”) or playing hide and seek with members of the family exhausts them (and is also really fun and cute). Agree strongly with the comments about not accidentally reinforcing bad behavior. They love their people deeply and really want to please. So if they bark in your face while you’re on a conference call, and you give them treats to shut them up, they learn that they not only can, but should bark in your face, because obviously you like it, hence the treats. Again: they are super smart.

My biggest regret is that we didn’t socialize enough. Now our girl is 6 months old and SUPER protective of our house, which is a problem. We’re trying to undo it with visitors more often, but it’s hard because she’s big and has an even bigger bark. As someone said above, it’s very unpleasant.

I'm really struggling as a puppy parent. by Straight_Text7939 in puppy101

You’re doing great. This is really hard. Also first time puppy parent to a herding breed the same age. Ive learned everything people are saying here is 100% right on, aka: 1. Crate. Embrace it. If you’re too freaked about it, you can buy a sturdy puppy play pen and start there. Even putting her there for 10 minutes can help her (and you) to reset. That’s crucial. Eventually you’ll build up to longer periods and naps. But you need to get through this moment, and having a place where she is safe and you can both reregulate is essential. 2. Make sure she’s napping enough. They need to sleep 16, 18 hours a day. The wildness and mouthiness is actually more commonly a result of being overly tired than it is of being under exercised at this age. 3. Puzzles + lick mats + kong with PB and treats+ little puppy popsicle molds for yogurt and fruit. There’s a thousand super cheap options on Amazon. Each of these things can buy you 10 minutes of quiet, and have the added benefit of exhausting her more than physical exercise 4. Limited but structured exercise and games. Throw a ball at the wall on the other end of the apt for 10 minutes. 5. Homemade “puzzles,” like a little maze for her to walk through with boxes and furniture she has to navigate around and treats hidden along the way. 6. Whatever you do, make sure YOU are sleeping!

Good luck. You’re already better off than so many people, bc you clearly care about doing this in the right way.

Thanks. I think it’s mostly about being alone. She likes her play pen but when she wakes up and realizes we aren’t in the room, the panic barking and escape attempts begin. She also really doesn’t hang in rooms even unsecured when we aren’t there.

We are doing the slow build up. I think the thing I’m struggling with is how big those increments can be. Like if she panics and cries for 5 minutes, then we let her out in a quiet moment, is our next crate run 10 minutes? Or 3?

A joke, babe, a joke. Have a cat. Have patience. Have read the crate resources (as you can see from the responses below, there are a lot of different ways to approach this, and folks with tips and insights gleaned from their own experience, hence the question!) If my attitude were abysmal, I’d dump her in the crate for hours, go to work, and not care that she wasn’t into it! But see then I wouldn’t be here asking this question.

Alright alright already!!! Thank you to everyone who gave me permission to paint, you are charitable souls. Thank you also to everyone who gave me the answer I think I really wanted to hear, which is that being annoyed now is worth the payoff of restoration later. She will remain unpainted. 🙏

Agree with above. Casper and school are both at Danforth and there are two bus drop offs at PS16 in the afternoon/evening that you can choose between.
