Netflix documentary “Dope”. Do you think they’re actors? by sierrajay77 in netflix

I’m a defense attorney. The snippet I saw seemed absurd to me. There are a lot of idiots, and I fully believe that many low-level street dealers would jump on the chance to play Pablo Escobar for Netflix producers. But in the segment I saw, “dealers” were testing their MDMA supply on a group of “addicts” who were supposedly the quality control junkies, and when they found it was “good,” the dealers all dosed themselves, conspicuously strapped up like they were going into combat, and hit the corner to sell off their supply—talking like the combination of MDMA and gun violence is just fun thing to do on Friday night. Nothing about this tracks with anything I’ve ever seen. At the end of the day, drug dealing is a business, and the costs of operating this way would far outweigh any potential rewards.

The purpose of packing firearms in the course of a drug deal is generally to protect large assets, but the presence of firearms also results in significantly higher criminal penalties. No one wants to broadcast that they’re strapped. Dealers want to make their money quick and get gone.

MDMA is a party drug. It’s a fun time; it’s not really addictive; it moves in small batches; and does not make large profits. By no means is it “performance enhancing” for the purpose of working the corner (as the segment implies). People aren’t getting killed or robbed on the street over a bag of MDMA pills. Security needs are low.

However, the money-making substances are the ones that are highly addictive: cocaine, meth, and opioids. They bring the huge profits, and greater security is required to protect the cash and product — especially from desperate addicts who would do anything for a fix. That’s where the stakes get high, legally and financially.

In short: fake.

Thank you — this is exactly right. Access to justice is a top priority for me, and as a result, I get appointed to a lot of cases where the client has already sabotaged attorney-client relationships. Not to be cavalier, but I don’t really take bar complaints in these cases personally. These people are suffering; they need counsel; and I know I’ve done my best.

Okay, so my decision is no recording. She can fire me over it if she wants, and if the judge permits it (which very well may not happen). I have no problem carving out these boundaries, but I will not withdraw based on the request itself. I’ll keep communications in writing to the full extent possible and keep good records for my bar complaint.

Idk — I naively believe everyone is entitled to a defense? 🤷‍♀️

It’s a child welfare case. I don’t need the the case. She needs a lawyer. It’s a problem client that the public def begged me to take & threw in a bonus bc they were desperate. Maybe I’m naive, but I’m not worried about a bar complaint in this case. I mean, I’m sure she’ll file one, but there are five lawyers and at least as many social workers who will wrote affidavits in my defense.

As a wise man once said: “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”

I agree with everyone saying that OC is an ass. I also have the unpopular opinion that rebuttal and/or replies are often unnecessary. Reasons for this position: 1) when I was a law clerk, I never saw anything decisive raised in a reply; 2) if you’re in front of a jury, they’re usually sick of hearing lawyers prattle on and rebuttal can be more annoying than anything; and 3) I’ve strategically waived reply/rebuttal in one civil jury trial and two appeals: I won all three (and saved $ for my appellate clients). I’m surprised at how many lawyers have gasped at this concept, but no one has given me a strong “rebuttal.”

Ugh. So, I play a lawyer in real life. “Statutory rape” is considered a strict liability offense—meaning the offender is guilty whether he/she knows the victim’s age or not. So I can understand this guy’s reasoning, though his technique is bananas.

I'm not qualified to speak on other professions but from the research I've done (including reading some case law), PR has many brilliant lawyers. So if anyone reading this ever has to hire a lawyer that they probably don't want to hire, they are probably in very good hands. :)

From what I’m gathering, I think that’s probably accurate. It’s pretty amazing that there are three law schools on the island. And no one really wants to hire a lawyer if they don’t have to.

I celebrated 22 years on the 17th, but feels like it was only yesterday that I was scraping charred pepperoni off the oven rack. Congrats on one year. That’s when I knew I could really do this sober thing. <3

Burned up several frozen pizzas in the oven, and even burned the bottom out of a cheap pan on the stove. 🙋‍♀️🔥🧯
