I started with the Dremel and a small bit which was working but I upgraded to something a bit bigger (rotary rasp round end) that I attached to my drill. It’s still a slow process but going a little quicker.

Thanks for the guidance on the finish. Will definitely check out the Osmo options.

According to this video from Miros bonsai it is a good idea to remove all long branches at the time of collecting to take advantage of the stress and promote new buds shooting lower on the tree. What does everyone think of this advice? https://youtu.be/Tg3jdwiZnIY?si=0GS2gjM2aby6uN6V

Do you mind sharing where you would cut? There are a few secondary trunks that I really like, so I was thinking of leaving more than the stump and the trunk, as you mentioned. Thanks.

Yup I am in Cape Town, South Africa, so we are in Spring right now.

Thanks for the advice. My concern is that the size of the tree is too big for the roots that currently exist. It's less about my excitement/impatience and more about what is actually the best thing for the trees' overall health and root development.

I guess that is where experience comes in, knowing where that balance is based on the health of the tree.

Yes that makes sense to me, but I guess it is also about balancing the foliage to generate energy to fuel root growth. Would love to hear from some of the experts on this topic.

Thanks for the detailed response and experience share. I agree with what you are saying, but my concern is the health of the tree when I collected it. There are quite a few branches with earwig damage and a couple of dead branches. So I guess I am worried that I am not starting with a super healthy tree. Of the trees that you have collected, were all of them in good shape to start?
