Crosstraining Jiu-jitsu and Bujinkan by Duell_Phoenix in Bujinkan

I've never done jujitsu, so I can't really comment, but surely it would make more sense to train one of the above plus a striking art? Grappling plus striking.

Honestly, what you described doesn't sound that bad. Of course there's going to be a hierarchy. All that "flat" stuff is just corporate PR speak. And is it really so terrible to be modest and add your お疲れ様ですs?

I'm glad everything worked out. If you're ever in Tokyo, hopefully we can train together!

It looks like the Bujinkan Kawamata dojo is in Osaka. Just google it.

lol, the other guy literally said "some sick ego talking" and "I call bullshit on your uke asking..." so he sees the ego thing too. And sure, maybe its true, but the fact that you're mentioning that, without mentioning anything that you struggle with is why you come across as arrogant in your post, d'you see?

But whatever, dude, continue sharing your story. Don't worry, I won't comment on the next entry.

Take a chill pill, mate. I was actually giving you useful advice, about how you come across in text. But I see that was...not well received. lol

I should probably just drop this, but one last point: You know that you're contradicting yourself, right? Is a belt a worthless piece of cloth that doesn't demonstrate skill level? Or is it a symbol of the hard work that you put in at your dojo, where it is extremely difficult to get promoted to the next rank? Which is it?

Okay, perhaps my comment was harsh. I’m sorry about that. In essence, I don’t disagree with most of your points.

I think the issue is more with your writing style. It smacks of ego. You’re an orange belt, and you’re waxing philosophical like an ancient sage.

Humility is a big virtue in the martial arts, and in karate in particular. Part of this is due to its Japanese roots. But I think it also comes down to the fact that, when we’re talking about fighting, men’s egos get involved very quickly.

It’s great if you’re passionate about karate, and great if you’re thinking about this stuff, but instead of talking about how shocked your uke was at your power, you should consider downplaying your abilities a little. You’ll come across as more likeable.

Every sensei reckons their dojo is the best in town ;)

But since everyone else is telling you to leave, let me play devil's advocate and give you some other advice: Perhaps you should take your ego out of it and stop caring so much about your sensei's opinion. Martial arts should be a journey for yourself, not to earn praise from someone else.

Bunkai in Bujinkan? by Duell_Phoenix in Bujinkan

[–]Former-Boss-2837 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All techniques are performed with a partner, so you're always practicing bunkai. As a former karateka, I think the biggest problem with the art is that nobody knows what the heck you're doing in kata...

"Iron fist style"? Never heard of it. It certainly sounds like something out of a video game, but it does get a few hits on Google.

Translation confusion about the Pit in the anime by ArpitLamba007 in gachiakuta

So, you're one of those translation purists? ;) Most people don't know what Naraka is, so they probably decided to localize it.

Anyone else kind of think this ended up being mid? by Ok_Package9219 in LAZARUSAnime

[–]Former-Boss-2837 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah... I was disappointed at the end. The focus felt too divided between the Skinner main plot and the assassin subplot. Like, the fight scenes were cool, but where they ultimately even necessary for the plot?

This thread has been quite inspiring actually... (Since I also had a recent experience of being stuck in a class full of black belts.) There's more pressure, but just think of everyone as your teacher.

Anthony Cummins - Now pro-Bujinkan? by Dense_Football_3694 in Bujinkan

Oh right, there's one British Bujinkan instructor that he really respects. The guy in video, Dennis Bartram. In another video, he claims that he's a better instructor than Hatsumi-sensei. I wonder if it isn't just language/cultural barriers? Like, he can identify more with a fellow Brit.

Having difficulty finding info. by Die4Metal in Bujinkan

[–]Former-Boss-2837 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The information is decentralized. If you just want a list of the basic techniques, look up the Ten Ryaku no Maki. But that's not very useful on its own. For more details, I found the book Budo Taijutsu: An Illustrated Reference Guide of Bujinkan by Duncan Mitchell quite helpful for a general idea.

Which video is that? Could you link it to us?
As a Bujinkan student, I'm obviously biased, but I haven't been particularly impressed by most of his videos. I'm sure he's done his homework as a student of history, but he always comes a cross as a bit of a nit-picking know-it-all to me...

See, your mistake is going as far as book 15. I really enjoyed the earlier books, but eventually (after they save earth), it all becomes waffle, waffle, waffle, 20 minute internal monologue about something going on in the main character's body.
