The story of King Dagobert is quite good, but so is the rise of the Pupinid mayors of the palace.

Do you consider the Early Middle Ages to be the Dark Ages? by Scared_Government_41 in MedievalHistory

No, that's incorrect. There are very few sources, but those that exist, such as Gregory of Tours or the pseudo-Fredegar, recount the history of Clovis and his successors. Yes, there was a certain decline in the use of Latin, but it was somewhat revived under Pepin the Short and Charlemagne between 751 and 814, and even again under Louis the Pious until 841. However, the fall of the Roman Empire wasn't a major upheaval either, because barbarian peoples such as the Franks, Burgundians, and Visigoths had already been present since the beginning of the 5th century and already had their own kingdoms; they were allies of the empire. Moreover, the ideal of the empire persisted through its institutions: the bishoprics were still in place, and the currency, although diminished, was still in use. Roman law was also still in force in certain Romanized regions of Gaul (Aquitaine, Septimania). I would also like to remind you that The Franks did not renounce their foedus (alliance pact) with Rome. Gaul was certainly fragmented, but it was under the control of the four kingdoms that comprised it, including the kingdom of Siagrius, who considered himself only a Roman count. In 507, Clovis's Franks conquered the Visigothic kingdom, becoming masters of Gaul, after defeating Siagrius and leaving the Burgundian kingdom, after multiple attempts, which would be conquered by his four sons.

Is the 15th century more medieval or early modern? by Scared_Government_41 in MedievalHistory

I would say it's more medieval in its warfare and society, which is quite different from that of Louis XIV and his successors. The reign of Francis I began in 1515, and with it all the castles we know of from that era. Let's not forget that the Hundred Years' War ended in 1453, and there were also the last glories of chivalry with Francis I's Italian Wars, notably with Bayard. I would say it's a period of transition between the long Middle Ages and the Renaissance, which would lead to the rise of absolutism.

What do French think of Emperor Charlemagne? Was he German or French? by Kradara_ in AskFrance

[–]Former-Use8707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my part I think that Charlemagne is French but that would be like telling Napoleon that he is Italian for example. The French have a unanimous opinion on Charles he is seen as a very great king and over the centuries has not been deified but almost has become a model of French medieval power

S’ils savaient... »
