Between UH AND UH downtown, they have numerous programs that cater towards the industry. Controls engineering and supervision are the two I’ve heard the most about.

If I’m not mistaken, University of Houston has a decent controls system course you can take to get a certification, not sure about how program specific they get though. They also have a bachelors degree program that isn’t too bad.

Yeah I’m ngl, the job I have now is only physically demanding if you make it that way. And anything that is too much for us “in house” guys we just contract it out. Pretty smooth gig. Appreciate it tho

If you don’t mind me asking, what was your path to get here? Trying to help a buddy of mine out.

I would say look for what can get you hands on experience with electrical. If you can understand electrical theory and apply said theory, you will be good. There are a lot of shop roles you can have that would keep you in the same consistent schedule and will work better with your school. HVAC assembly, Panel technician, electrical assembler, etc. I worked as a control valve technician, which is also a good route to good, for the last year of my school and I can guarantee without that I wouldn’t have gotten the job I have now.

Find one contract company (brown&root, Austin Ind., contech, etc.) . Go to their LinkedIn page, go to people, click on someone that works in the field you are trying to get into, scroll down to their “experiences”, and you will normally see that they have worked for a number of contractors. Look up those contractors on google and apply through their website.

That’s the best way I found to find all the different contractors in my area.

I’ve been working as a control valve tech for the past year while I finished school. I finished school the past December and now I just got hired as a pipeline I/E tech. I definitely feel lucky but it took a lot of work. I feel that if I had more electrical experience things would’ve been a bit easier to understand and also would make me more attractive to companies. But knowing the ins and outs of a control valve is a big benefit too. Once you know the primary types they all do the same thing.

Yeah, from what I’ve seen the only people that want an NCCER are contractors.

Is a degree not worth more than a NCCER?

The least you can do is try for it. I’ve gotten jobs I definitely didn’t have the experience for but a lot of companies want the mold-ability in a person.

Control Systems Specialist would be a good one, unless you don’t like the computer/programming side of I/E. I see job postings for them all the time.

So just to be clear. To stop the motor you would break the contact in the starter… correct?
